I have a constant knocking sound which seems to be coming from the top end if my 2006 1.6 petrol ford focus zetec. Can anyone recommend an additive (STP possibly) that might cure the problem before I have to take it to a garage? By the way, the noise only starts about 2 mins after engine start up.

You need to get the valves adjusted before you damage them-stp is thick and ford doesn't recommend any oil additive-that may cause more problems than it helps-Denny

Sounds to me like a very common problem has occured to your neighbor. If this is a SOHC engine, one of the valve seats in the number 4 cylinder has fallen out. I'm sure it has damaged the head and the piston. Stop trying to run it or you might blow a hole in the cylinder wall or break a rod or both.

It's normal for the cat to get hot - given they've replaced everything (just about) that could cause your problem - they have not looked at the injectors and O2 sensors. If you had something burning in the engine bay it was most likely electrical and you should look for burnt wires. You probably have a short in the ignition system or fuel injector wire harness. It's nearly impossible to diag a problem like this without having the car first hand. It must be throwing check engine light codes. Get the codes and post them. Also try a different shop at this point.

Aww, you may have a failed big end or crank bearing. With the engine hot and running, using a glove, remove each spark plug lead in turn and then replace it. If you hear the knocking decrease on one cylinder, that's the cause.

Also you can get the oil pressure measured on the hot engine. If below spec at idle and low revs, that is most likely caused by such a failed bearing.

There is no quick fix for this fault, the engine has to come out, so I hope it is something else, like a loose pulley on the crank nose, alternator, power steering pump, or A/C

hi i have a 2001 1.6 zetec ford focus. the engine managment light is on and my car has bee leaking oil into the airbox on the floor and onto the gearbox coming from the rocker cover breather hose ( i have changed the camshaft breather hose and valve ) any suggestions ?

I Have a ticking sound from under the bonnet and it sounds a bit like i am driving a Transit Van from inside

If its really loud and sounds like a transit then the bottom end is knocking so the egine is pretty much no good.

If its a slight ticking noise higher pitch then its the hydrolic tappets can be fixed but depends how bad they are they might have to be replaced.

Also check the oil level. is it a zetec? petrol or diesel?

Those Holes are for Factory add-ons.. and differs from auto to manual transmission..Unless somebody tried to add and accessory.. I wouldnt worry about it.. Thanx

There was a cover over the engine that ford recommended being removed as it caused overheating by not letting the air flow around the engine.
