Does the muffler crossover pipe have to be removed first?

  • collrobs May 08, 2009

I know where the starter is and both bolts are removed, but starter will not come out due to muffler from exhaust manifold blocking only way out. Thanks anyway and maybe this information will help you help me.

What is wrong. I only hear a click when turning the key. Battery is fine.

if as you say the battery is good, and all dash lights stay on bright when turning the key, your starter motor is faulty its either the solenoid which is the bit on the side of the starter that engages the starter when you turn the key, or the starter is jammed/stuck or worn out try hitting the starter with a hammer or if no room use a long bar rest the bar on the starter and hit the other end a few times if it then starts the motor was stuck, like wise if you have manual transmission put the car in gear let the hand/park brake off and rock the car forward and back a few times then try starting, eiter way you will need to repair or replace the starter motor

Removing harmonic balancer

First, you have to loosen the crank pulley center bolt. Best way is with an impact gun-bolt is very tight. If you have to use a breaker bar to loosen the bolt, you will have to devise a way to hold the crankshaft from turning backward while loosening it. One method is to remove the starter and wedge a piece of wood against the flywheel, preventing it from turning, while you are loosening the center bolt.
From the beginning: raise and block the side of car that the front of engine is towards. Remove the wheel and the inner fender splash shield. Remove the belts. Remove negative battery terminal, remove starter. Wedge the flywheel so it won't turn backward. Loosen and remove the center bolt. Some harmonic balancers will slide right off the crankshaft now, some are on very tight, if you can't wiggle it, tap it, and get it to move, then buy an inexpensive harmonic balancer removal puller, just a few bucks, easy to use, will save balancer from trying to hammer it off. All you need is enough room to mount up the puller to the balancer, and get the balancer moving off the crank.
Some engine lay outs there isn't enough room: then you really have to get creative, either lowering engine enough to get to pulley, or raising engine out. But most engines are positioned where the crank pulley can come off easily, with enough room to get the puller on.
The pulley may have a woodruff key in a slot on the crankshaft, and a corresponding notch on the pulley, for proper positioning of the pulley to crank. Don't lose the woodruff key.

Need to change thermostat in 2003 grand am 3.4

I have done this and the procedure calls for removing the exhaust crossover which you don't really have to do however it is a tight fit and probably will make life easier to get a wobble extension since some of these bolts you cant get right over. It is located on the driver side under the exhaust crossover and a few small waterlines must be removed in order to access it. If I remember correctly the bottom bolt on the housing does not have to be taken out all the way to get it off. the hard part is getting to bolts loose, Just take your time and realize its a hard place to work in.

How do i remove and replace the starter on a 93 s10 Chevy blazer

There should be two bolts and a big wire comming from the battery to remove. I always do the wire first then the two bolts. You have to be careful starters are heavy when you are on your back under a truck. All of this is located on the same side as the battery you can fallow the red wire from the battery to the starter if you need help locting it. The starter is not hard to change but there is very little room to move it in and out of position so it takes a little bit of time.

What do i have to do to take out the starter in a 1991 s10 with a 4.3 motor i have already taken out both bolts but not enough room

I think this one has the cover on the bottom of the transmission. There will be a couple of support bars that are bolted to it as well. Remove those support bars and the lower cover and you'll have enough room to drop the starter down.

Thermostat location

The thermostat is in a difficult position. Follow the upper radiator hose and it leads into the block under the throttle body.
Remove the air filter assembly and you'll c what is the exhaust manifold crossover pipe right in front of the thermostat housing.
NICE, it gives you very little room to remove the 2 bolts to the housing and once u remove those then you'll find you have the thermostat housing loose but because of that darn exhaust manifold crossover pipe u don't have enough room to take the thermostat housing out to change the stinking thermostat.
So from what you can see, you have to remove the heat shield which is cased around the exhaust manifold crossover pipe and if you still can't get enough room to remove the thermostat, (which you amy find out)then you'll have to remove the crossover pipe as well just to change the thermostat.
If you have to remove the crossover pipe then their are 2 bolts on both ends of the pipe leading into the manifolds. But then the tough parts done and once u switch the thermostat over and ATTENTION:remove any old gasket material and put a new gasket in it's place then installation is reverse of removal.
Good luck and hope this helps,

I can't get Chevy K1500 starter removed to replace.

Make sure all your wires are off. Push the starter forward, turn it to the right, and pull it down. It will come out. It don't seem like there's room, but there is. Good luck. PHil
