Question about 1994 Pontiac Bonneville

1 Answer

When i start, the fuel gauge darts around the quarter marker then settles on empty no matter the amount of fuel.

When i start the car in the morning, the fuel gauge marker on the dashboard immediately moves to the quater tank mark, dances a little before falling onto the empty mark. This happens even the tank is full. During the day, it sticks on the empty mark.

In the dash, there is a small step down transformer, from 12 volts to about 3. Seems to not be working have it checked out.

SOURCE: check gauges light

Possible bad guage, bad wiring, or bad sending unit. Check each one independently of each other, start with wiring first, then sending unit.

Fuel gage showing half a tank but trip computer only registering 60 miles left

Its very simple. If the gauge is showing half full then fill the tank and see how much fuel it takes. If the amount you add is approximately 50 percent of the fuel tank capacity then you know the fuel gauge is accurate . In that case the computer is giving an inaccurate reading and should be ignored. All you need is an accurate fuel gauge - it does not matter a row of beans what the computer says if the fuel gauge is reading correctly.

How to repair

The problem you have is caused by a defective fuel level sending unit, when you move the fuel moves and the gauge jumps around. Pull the gas tank out and replaced the fuel level sending unit.

worth checking the fuel tank for holes or there might be some fuel delivery pipes leaking badly. Or it might be an O2 sensor not giving correct signal to ecu thus consuming so much fuel.

look for broken/loose wires/connections around the tank while someone else is observing the fuel gauge. a broken/loose ground could be at fault. the fuel sending unit sends the signal to the gauge, also, look for broken/loose wires/connections from the fuel tank to the fuel gauge if you haven't found the problem yet. if all else fais, ground the body with a temporary connection to see if that is good, body ground is needed to keep them running good.

Gas Gauge or Sending Unit

more than likely it's the gauge it sets in a circuit board and sometimes the contacts get worn and with vibration it voltage spikes it and then it fails. very seldom is it the sending unit in the tank. please rate this...thanks
