Try cleaning the IAC (Idle Air Control valve.) by buying spray carb cleaner and removing the air cduct from the engine. On the fuel system side look into the hole and try to locate 2 holes on the side . With the engine running at about 1200 rpms, spray about 10 seconds worth of cleaner at the 2 holes. Turn the engine off. Let the cleaner soak. Then repeat procedure. The IAC can also be removed and cleaned if you wish.

yes, this is the case of a failed throttle body, in which case it needs replaced, the car is getting too much fuel causing the high idle. this needs replaced asap. you could proably find a small independant honda shop that could do the work for less.

There are two different things that you have combined into one. The throttle position sensor is one part and the IAC (idle air control) valve is another. Both are located on the throttle body. The throttle position sensor is located directly across from where the throttle cables attach to the throttle body. It typically has a three wire connector. The IAC is either on the top or the bottom of the throttle body. It is cylindrical in shape and typically has a four wire connector.

Could be a dirty throttle body, vac leak, or a defective idle air control valve. The computer adjusts idle speed by controlling the amount of air entering the throttle body via the control valve.
Is the check engine light on ?

Description & Operation

Not for Dodge Stratus Sedan
The idle air control motor (IAC) attaches to the throttle body. It is an electric stepper motor. The PCM adjusts engine idle speed through the idle air control motor to compensate for engine load, coolant temperature or barometric pressure changes. The throttle body has an air bypass passage that provides air for the engine during closed throttle idle. The idle air control motor pintle protrudes into the air bypass passage and regulates airflow through it.
The PCM adjusts engine idle speed by moving the IAC motor pintle in and out of the bypass passage. The adjustments are based on inputs the PCM receives. The inputs are from the throttle position sensor, crankshaft position sensor, coolant temperature sensor, MAP sensor, vehicle speed sensor and various switch operations (brake, park/neutral, air conditioning).

When engine rpm is above idle speed, the IAC is used for the following functions:


Off-idle dashpot Deceleration air flow control A/C compressor load control (also opens the passage slightly before the compressor is engaged so that the engine rpm does not dip down when the compressor engages)

  2. Tighten mounting screws to 5.1 Nm (45 inch lbs.) torque.
  3. Attach electrical connector to the IAC.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.

The 3 wire Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is mounted on the throttle body and is connected to the throttle blade.

In response to engine operating conditions, the PCM will adjust fuel injector pulse width and ignition timing.
The PCM needs to identify the actions and position of the throttle blade at all times. This information is needed to assist in performing the following calculations:

Removal & Installation

3.7L & 4.0L

  1. Disconnect TPS electrical connector.
  2. Remove TPS mounting screws.
  3. Remove TPS.

To Install:
The TPS is mounted to the throttle body. The throttle shaft end of throttle body slides into a socket in the TPS. The TPS must be installed so that it can be rotated a few degrees. (If sensor will not rotate, install sensor with throttle shaft on other side of socket tangs). The TPS will be under slight tension when rotated.
  1. Install TPS and retaining screws.
  2. Tighten screws to 7 Nm (60 inch lbs.) torque.
  3. Connect TPS electrical connector to TPS.
  4. Manually operate throttle (by hand) to check for any TPS binding before starting engine.

4.7L
  1. Remove air duct and air resonator box at throttle body.
  2. Disconnect TPS electrical connector.
  3. Remove two TPS mounting bolts (screws).
  4. Remove TPS from throttle body.

To Install:
The throttle shaft end of throttle body slides into a socket in TPS. The TPS must be installed so that it can be rotated a few degrees. If sensor will not rotate, install sensor with throttle shaft on other side of socket tangs. The TPS will be under slight tension when rotated.
  1. Install TPS and two retaining bolts.
  2. Tighten bolts to 7 Nm (60 inch lbs.) torque.
  3. Manually operate throttle control lever by hand to check for any binding of TPS.
  4. Connect TPS electrical connector to TPS.
  5. Install air duct/air box to throttle body.

Removal & Installation
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor connector.
  3. Disconnect the breather hose from the valve cover.
  4. Remove the air intake tube.
  5. Disconnect the throttle cables by opening the throttle and moving the cable through the release slot.
  6. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the throttle body.
  7. Disconnect the Throttle Position (TP) sensor and the idle air control valve connectors.
  8. Disconnect the coolant hoses from the throttle body.
  9. Remove the throttle body and discard the gasket.
  10. Remove the TP sensor.
  11. Remove the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve.
  12. Remove the throttle body retaining nuts.
  13. Remove the throttle body.

To install:

  1. Install the throttle body.
  2. Connect the TP sensor connector and the IAC valve connector.
  3. Connect the coolant hoses to the throttle body.
  4. Connect the vacuum hoses to the throttle body.
  5. Connect the throttle cable.
  6. Install the air intake tube.
  7. Connect the breather hose to the valve cover.
  8. Connect the IAT sensor connector.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10. Fill the cooling system

95 taurus idling too high like it is stuck wide open


Several issues can cause this problem, either singularly or in combination.. Check the throttle body for dirt and sticky carbon deposits. clean the throttle body using a spray can carburettor/choke cleaner, and with the throttle valve held open, wipe out the bore of the throttle body with a solvent soaked clean rag. Make sure the throttle valve is not sticking any where in the throttle travel between closed and open.

Next, check the idle air bypass valve that is mounted on the top of the throttle body, for dirt and carbon deposits inside that can cause the idle air bypass valve to stick in an open position. Clean the inside of the idle air bypass valve with carb cleaner.

If the ignition timing is over advanced, (Specifies timing advanced is10 degrees Before Top Dead Center, with the in-line spark out plug removed from the spout connector housing, and with the idle speed set to the idle RPM shown on the emissions sticker under the hood, with the engine fully warmed up,) use a timing light to check and set the ignition timing to specification.

The throttle position sensor must be installed on the throttle body using the required method or the idle speed will likely be excessively high. Beginning with the battery negative cable disconnected from the battery, and with the throttle position sensor removed, place the sensor in position on the throttle body with the drive tabs on the sensor placed after the drive tabs on the throttle shaft, the holding the sensor on the throttle body, rotate the sensor counter clockwise to align the mounting screw holes in the sensor and the throttle body, Insert the sensor screws into the senor screw holes, into the threaded holes in the throttle body and tighten finger tight. Carefully center the sensor on the sensor screws, then tighten the screws firmly without over tightening. Reconnect the sensor electrical harness connector.

Inspect the throttle valve idle stop screw adjustment that holds the throttle valve open slightly, to prevent the throttle valve from touching the throttle body bore surface with the throttle closed, and the accelerator pedal unpressed.

Idle air control at base of throttle body. Passages could be plugged or idle hard stop needs adjusting.

Air Intake System Sensors Air intake system sensors include a heated resistor-type mass air flow (MAF) sensor and throttle position (TP) sensor; both supply data to the powertrain control module (PCM). The PCM also monitors engine speed.
Air Intake System Control Devices The idle air control (IAC) solenoid regulates idle speed by adjusting the amount of air allowed into the intake manifold. Adjustment is made by varying the duty cycle output by the powertrain control module (PCM). The PCM will increase the duty cycle for added mechanical or electrical loads. The IAC solenoid is combined with the fast idle control (FIC) solenoid which is turned on when the air conditioner is engaged to help compensate for the additional load. The IAC valve must be replaced as an assembly with the FIC solenoid.
Fast Idle Control (FIC) Solenoid The fast idle control (FIC) solenoid (Figure 1) compensates for idle speed change caused by the operation of the air conditioner compressor. The FIC solenoid is controlled by the FIC relay. The FIC relay is energized when the air conditioner clutch is energized and the relay allows the FIC solenoid to turn on and let an additional volume of air into the intake manifold.

Throttle Body (TB) The throttle body (TB) controls the amount of air that flows into the engine through a single butterfly valve. The single butterfly valve opening is determined by the accelerator pedal. The TB is cast with an air bypass channel and houses several emission-related components for the powertrain control module (PCM).

Throttle Position Sensor (TP Sensor) The throttle position (TP) sensor responds to the accelerator pedal movement. The TP sensor is a potentiometer that transforms the throttle plate opening angle into output voltage and sends the voltage signal to the powertrain control module (PCM). In addition, the sensor detects the opening and closing speed of the throttle plate and sends the voltage signal to the PCM. Also, the TP sensor is used to determine the air intake when the mass air flow (MAF) sensor fails. This mode of operation is called Fail Safe.
The TP sensor integrates the idle (IDL) switch within the housing. The IDL switch detects when the throttle plate is closed and an idle condition occurs. The PCM is supplied with this input signal.
