It is traditional to send the head out to be machined to make it very flat. You would need a new head gasket and new bolts in order to torque it properly. Bolts always stretch a little so it is not wise to reuse old bolts. Parts and labour... It's not likely cheap. It may actually be cheaper to get a used engine from the junkyard. Get an estimate

SOURCE: blown head gasket

I would change both, as well as use new head bolts. Make sure your heads are not warped or cracked, especially the one that is leaking. There may not be any need to change the head if it is not cracked. These are prone to blowing a gasket especially after 150K miles or so. It will not cost a huge additional amount to change both head gaskets since the engine will have to be disassembled down to the heads anyway. Hope this helps you, Rick

Likely what we call, "mousse". Oil. Typically caused by a blown head gasket.

There are "head gasket fix" treatments you can try. I don't know if they work. Replacing a head gasket can be expensive.

I have a 2000 2.2 chevy cavalier that i buy today and it have oil in the reservoir bottle what can it be plz help

If it has oil in the coolant resivoir bottle it has most likely got a blown head gasket or a cracked head/block. It will require diagnosing and repair which will be expensive. I hope you got it cheap. Fitting a second hand engine may be a good option as you dont know how hot this one may have gotten.

Im looking to purchase a 2000 Alero. They say the only thing wrong with it is the head gasket but others tell me it could be a cracked head or anything and its making me very nervous. What could all be...

If it's drivable ask if you can take it & HAVE an independent inspection done. It can be bad head gasket, and head (cracked), cracked block and many other things. In any case, hope you're getting it cheap because it's going to be expensive to repair.

Head gaskets

There is really no difference between a blown or cracked head gasket. In either case the gasket would have to be replaced. Generally the term "cracked" is used when referring specifically to the cylinder head/s its/them selves. If the cylinder head is cracked it is a much more expensive repair.

Does the 2005 nissan sentra 1.8L have problems with head gasket blowing ?

Not generally, unless the engine's been run hot, if even only for a moment. If the head gasket is blown prepare for major out of pocket expenses because if the engine overheated it will bend every valve and usually warp the head beyond repair. I honestly hope this is not your problem, it's an extremely expensive fix. Hope this helps, good luck!

My daughter's 2000 Altima looks like there is oil in the radiator and no oil in the engine. Is this a blown head gasket? Where is the drain plug for the radiator? Better yet, what is the process for...

Could be a blown Head gasket or cracked head. Should be a drain at the bottom of the radiator I think on the drivers side. You will need to pull the heads off and have them checked Magnifluxed for cracks. If they find none then install new head gaskets and see what happens. I have the torque specs for your head bolts if you need them. Let me know.

BLOWN HEAD GASKET

crandallyoun: replacing the head gasket on the motor will run roughly $7-800.00 excluding any incidentals. This is just the head gasket and labor There are variables.
As far as you changing it? This is a serious engine and an expensive one to make a mistake on. You can find Haynes manuals in the book stores which will give you the step by step with illustrations. There are also a few other publications. If you go on ebay you may even be able to buy a factory manuel.

Blown Head gasket/Affordable repair?

The average sale price for a 91 Lexus in the US, is $3900.00. Used radiator would be around $200.00. Machine shop to machine the head (highly recommended) $500.00 to $1000.00. Gaskets and hoses another $200.00. I don’t know how much you have into it, but I hope this helps your decision.
