SOURCE: rough idle then stalls

Vacume leak or bad idle motor. With the car in park and running with the hood open listen for leaks moving your hand around the different hoses looking for a change in the sounds that you hear. The idel motor also makes the car idel up to 1500 RPM or so right at start-up then idel down, If it doesn;t the idel motor is likly. Check engine light is on when running? Test for codes, Follow code test charts don't skip any steps!.

It may be a throttle position sensor, or the wiring harness for IAC (idle control valve).

When the car is completely cool, check the electric fan(s) for smooth rotation.

Clean/check/change the thermo sensor, contact and wire.

Excavate air pocket in coolant system / check for head gasket leak

This test will kill two birds with one stone.

You will spill some coolant during this air pocket purge test.......BE KIND TO THE ENVIRONMENT and ANIMAL please clean up after the test!

Put the front end on a pair of ramp or park your car on a VERY STEEP HILL (radiator facing top of the hill) .

Top of the coolant reserve tank

Let it ran for 10-15 minutes.

Monitor for air pockets escaping from coolant reserve tank.

Small amount of bubbles is OK at 1-5 minute mark

After the thermostat open up (after 195 F warm up) at
5-12 minute mark or after high idle you should see less bubbles.

If you do not see any in rush of bubbles then your thermostat may be partially stuck or rusted badly inside the thermostat hosing.

Give the thermostat host few gentle taps.

If you see larger bubbles surfacing after 15 minutes then should do a hydrocarbon (HC) dye test to test for potential head gasket leak.

Let engine cold down and top off coolant reserve tank.

Start monitor for coolant lost

A coolant flush is require every 2 years or 24,000 miles.

I recommend the thermostat that has a relief pop-let to reduce the change of burst radiator and coolant hoses.

Make sure you get a new thermostat gasket, black RTV and fresh coolant for the job.

97 malibu with a 3100 engine - it dies if you let off the gas - so it won't idle - but runs fine as long as you are giving it gas

idle air control motor is most likely not working . sometimes you can clean them out with intake cleaner spray or you may need to replace it . also look for vacuum leaks . another possible problem is a egr valve stuck open .i would think the engine light would have come on if that was the case for the egr valve

2005 cobalt , engine chokes and kills in stopped or idle position

Could be a dirty throttle body, faulty idle control valve, or a vac leak. Usually if the idle control valve fails the check engine light will come on.

1991 chevy c1500 stalling

Usually a problem with a dirty throttle body or a faulty idle air control valve. The computer controls idle speed by regulating how much air enters the intake thru the valve.

1999 Chevy Malibu. Whenever I stop the car stalls. It can't just idle, I have to push on the gas pedal all the time, or it quits running. Fuel pump is ok. Fuel filter ok. Fuel injectors ok. Timing...

buy a can of spray carb cleaner and clean your throttle plate, pcv valve, and most importantly your idle air control valve. This device controls your idle speed. Check for vacuum leaks, you may have a crack in a vacuum hose.

1997 chevy malibu 3.1 engine starts rough and wont idle only runs with gas pedal being pumped

check the fuel filter to see if it is getting clogged and not letting enough fuel through it. make sure you have proper fuel to throttle body so it will run properly. if this does not help much, check idle air control valve.

I just gave my 2001 malibu new spark plugs and wiring, now it runs great but idles hard at stop lights? not sure whats wrong

check and clean out the idle air control, it may be clogged up at the engine side. when cleaning valve, do not push on end of valve or put in any liquid, to clean, use a old tooth brush to clean off carbon on end of valve. from tip of valve to body should be 1 and 1/8, the idle should be about 750 for a 6 cylinder.

I had this same problem on my 2005 monte carlo, took mechanic a while to figure out it was the idle air control valve. They also replace the idle air control motor.
