Changing spark plugs

I brought my car in for a tune up and was quoted over $500.  Is this even close to the cost of replacing spark plugs and filters?

It is the larger of the 2 available...  5L SOHC I think

  • betterferret May 08, 2009

That is amazing...  I have never owned a car that was even close to that cost for a tune up.  Could you elaborate on the difficulties involved?  And is it even possible for someone with just basic tools to do it?

OK YOUR ENGINE HAS WHAT IS CALLED COIL OVER SPARK PLUG IGNITION, THIS MAKES FOR ALLOT OF LABOR TIME TO TUNE IT, BUT $500 IS WAY OUT OF LINE, GET A COUPLE MORE ESTIMATES, ASK HEM TO SHOW U THE LABOR GUIDE (THERE IS A BOOK THEY USE TO LOOK UP TIMES FOR DIFF REPAIRS) TIME FOR THE JOB, IF THEY WON'T DO THAT THEY ARE CROOKS.

The entire intake plenum needs to be removed and gasket has to be replaced for the rear 3 plugs at the firewall. Theres alot more labour these days for once simple tasks as newer cars keep loosing engine room. Things start stacking on top of one another and next thing you know, they just throw a plastic shroud over the entire thing to keep it from looking like an giant wart. 500 seems to be right for this vehicle. Changing 6 plugs on my '87 Buick, 15 minutes, my girls sebring, 5 hours... Whatever happen to the beauty of a clean uncluttered engine bay...

What is the cost of a tune up?

Changing spark plugs is very car specific. Some cars are easy, some you have to take away loads of stuff on top of the engine for horizontal V6 or V8..

High Tension Leads, the proper name for the 'Wires' are easy, a 10 minute job and come with the spark plug connectors.

What parts do I change to tune up my 2008 dodge caliber

For a standard tune-up, the parts needed include an air filter, oil filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, and spark plug wires. You should also have oil, transmission fluid, coolant, windshield washer fluid, and brake fluid available. A tune-up consists of topping off or replacing fluids, changing spark plugs and spark plug wires, changing the fuel, oil, and air filters, and checking the pressures of the tires. More detailed tune-ups run a diagnostic test on the vehicle to check for any codes that indicate additional issues.

How do you do a tune-up

Improve the FixYa experience for everyone by voting.

Modern cars meke tune-ups extremely easy, A major tune-up consists of changing the oil and filter, replacing the air filter, and replacing the spark plugs, I also suggest checking for loose wire, cracking in the wiring harness, and checking the coolant. It's also a good idea to drive to the nearest AutoZone and get a free diagnostic scan and a check of the charging system.

The total cost for the above parts will run about $35.

All the best,

Ben

How much is a tune up for a 1999 for a ford escort

Depends.
In theory you could just change the 4 spark plugs for $20.
Put it costs more is you do all the filters, the PCV, check the EGR and purge valve, check any codes, check transmission fluid, etc.

Do i need to tune up nissan sentra 1996 model. i do not notice any problem. what is the cost to do a tune up

A tune up consists of the followig: -Spark plug replacement -Air filter cleaning/replacement -Fuel Filter replacement -Engine timing correction.
So yes, you must do a tune up every once in a while and a must before an emissions evaluation. It's not very costly and can be easily affordable by someone who can purchase gas for everyday use. For a 1996 Nissan Sentra, most of the cost will come from the spark plug that you will buy and the labor cost for correcting the timing of the vehicle.

I recently checked brought my car to the local

There are 6 coils that fire the spark plugs. You only need to replace the coils that are misfiring. Some autoparts stores will let you use a diagnostic meter for free. The code will tell you which cylinder is misfiring and the autoparts store can tell you the firing order so you can locate which cylinder & coil.
Unless your car is due for a tune up I would just replace the faulty coil and not the spark plugs. Dealer will always recommend replacing all the coils. Eventually another coil may fail but who knows when that will be. When you notice the symptom again just tackle it as you did this one.

Yes I have an 05 Camry and the tune up is due at 36000. I have 40,000 and just looked at my manual. I wanted to consider changing my own spark plugs. I haven't done this in 15 yrears or so. I was rudely awakened by not even seeing where the plugs are located. They cover it all up and there is a condenser or something like that on top of each spark plug. Each item on top of each plug takes the place of a distributor. So if the timing is off it is from your spark plugs and/or these items that attach to each spark plug. They cost abour $ 118 each at discount auto parts. You have 4 of them on the LE.

I think I am going to return the spark plugs which cost about 6.50 each. I will just go get a tune up. Not worth my time to tear everything apart in a confined space take the screws off these condensor or what ever they call them that attaches to the spark plugs. then you pull them out very carefully hoping you don't ruin them. Yuck.
