You have a shorted wire. There is probably a burnt wire harness connector that is fusing two circuits together. If your not mechanically inclined you will need to have a mechanic check your wiring.

SOURCE: brake lights ,tail lights wont work i have replaced fuses, bulbs

Check fuses, I believe that the WJ's (99-04) ran a separate circuit for bake lights. Not sure if they did same for the ZJ's (93-98)

How do i replace the tail light bulb

Open the trunk, and pull back the carpet behind the tail light assembly-- you should see 3 different sets of wires going into the back of the tail light assembly. Pick the one you need to replace, and give it about a quarter turn counter-clockwise, and the bulb, harness, and wire can be pulled out of the tail light. Replace the burned out bulb in the socket, and reinstall the bulb just as you removed it.
If you have difficulty getting to the wiring harnesses to dislodge them from the tail light assembly, you can remove the tail light entirely by unscrewing the black plastic wingnuts that hold the tail light assembly in place. It may take a little bit of effort to get them started, but will allow you to see what you are doing a bit better.

How to Fix the Tail Light on a Ford Focus?

1)tail light located behind the panel in the trunk. 2)remove the two screws holding the panel in place. 3)The tail light assembly is hold/caught by two plastic pins and the spring assembly. 4)Pull driver's side tail light outward slowly and gently twist it until it slips off the plastic pegs. 5) In the same way pull the left side tail light also. 6) Tail light connected wires should not be pulled out.only the tail light should be removed. 7) simply push the bulb in slightly and twist it to your left and the bulb will pop out. 8)after the bulb is out.in the same way insert the new bulb in the socket. 9) Reconnect all the parts removed in the procedure. This will help.thanks.

How do i change the tail light on my 1998 nissan sentra?

the actual tail lamp lens of the light bulb inside the lens?

for the actual light bulb, open the trunk at the back of the lens there will be a grey circle connector, 1 is the turn light, 1 is the tail light, simply rotate that connector opposite of the position that says "lock" written on the circle connector, that pulls out and then you can turn the bulb and replace that.

for the actual lens, you will need a 8mm socket and possibly a pry bar or a hammer. there are 3 8 mm bolts at the back of each lens, find them, they should be at each corner of the light, take those out, unclip the bulb harnesses mentioned above, unclip any connectors, should be 1 white one, then hammer the ends of the bolts you removed, this loosens the seal around the tail light. simply pull the tail light straight out, if it wont come out varify you removed all bolts and connestions then proceed to use the pry bar or the end of a hammer to pull the light out which will pull out towards the outside of the car not into the trunk. takes about 15 mins to do very easy.

Replace rear tail light bulb on a 2005 nissan maxima

Open the trunk, from the inside remove the side trunk liner (by removing the plastic tabs the liner can be pulled back). Once the liner is pulled back you will need to remove two nuts which secure the tail light in place. Once the two nuts are removed you can start pulling the whole tail light assembly out. There are two other tabs that secure the tail light in place which may give you some resistance but the light should come out without too much force once the two nuts are removed.
Once the tail light is out you can change whatever bulbs you need to.

What started this mess? tailights, fog lights, brake lights....

The relay has nothing to do with the tail lights, but replacing the switch sounds like a good idea. There's a nut holding it in place, see http://www.skandix.de/en/spare-parts/electrics/switches/switch-headlight/1027524/ to get an idea of the construction. And the price. This is not worth fiddling about unreliable workarounds...
In addition, if fuses 15 and/or 16 burn frequently there might be a problem with the tail light cabling.

Good luck

2002 Ford Taurus Driver Side tail light bulb replacement

open the trunk.
pull back the cover on the side you need to change, there are usually 3 black plastic nut you have to remove before doing this.
after the trunk interior cover is pulled off there are 3 nuts, 11mm wrench or socket will take them off. pull the taillight assembly out and twist the socket out containing the bulb that is blown. the bulb just pulls out of the socket. while the bulb is out you should inspect the socket for corrosion, it wont hurt to clean it up and put some die electric grease in there

Right brake light out; tail light works fine

most rear tail lights and turn/stop lights are the same dual filiment bulb. it is possible for your tail light to work and your brake light not to and still have a bad bulb. I would check the bulb first, your brake light works on the left yes? this would mean that the fuse is fine
