Toyota Celica GT transmission

2003 Celica GT is slow to shift into overdrive, it takes it about 1-2 minutes to slip in after hitting around 50 MPH. After it slips in the 1st time, it runs fine until you park it for a few hours. The car only has 65K miles on it, and I recently had the transmission flushed to try to alleviate the problem. Any suggestions on what it might be?

Assuming the 4 Speed automatic w/OD vs 5 Speed manual w/OD
You mention transmission flushed, not sure what flushed with. Assuming drained, refilled was filter replaced too?
It may be your torque converter didn't drained and your fluid level is too high. Bring car up to temp before checking tranny fluid level. If fluid level is high, it needs to be reduced to proper levels. .
Does your car run hot? use garden hose or go to self serve car wash and from back side of radiator wash any leaves, bugs etc from radiator. Your automatic transmission has a cooler attached to radiator and if transmission fluid is running hot will expand and cause a myriad of problems.

Finally, If you are driving in between speed where OD is on & off it causes excess wear w/o fuel benefit. Check owners manual, but one suggestion is to leave OD off until you are on the freeway.
overdrive on = freeway = includes 4th gear
overdrive off = city driving = stop and go traffic.

SOURCE: My 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee transmission slips in overdrive

sounds like a possible shift solenoid. If it's due for a fluid change, do that and add a container of lucas trans conditioner. Likely you have a drain plug on the pan so if the fluid was recently serviced, just drain a quart out and replace with the additive, then top off.
If the condition does not change within a week, likely you will need better diagnosis from a reputable trans shop.

I would change the transmission filter.if clogged it will slip and loose power on steep upgrades try that it is inexpensive. If that don't help you may need a new transmission.

low power is caused by many things.
1: dragging brakes or very low tire pressure (dangerous)
2: slipping transmission, called Flare or will not up shift. to 4th gear and overdrive TC clutch lock.
3: weak engine. there are 4 engines used USA. so what engine , if engine is weak.
G16, J20, H25, H27?
we can not guess engines.ever or country.

2003 toyota echo when shifting above 45 mph makes a loud high rpm noise especially on the highway

If it is not going into overdrive or lockup it could be the fluid or an electrical problem. Some of the shifting is controlled by solenoids now.
You may have to get a transmission shop to evaluate it for you.

Transmission over drive is causing the transmission to slip. When I take off the overdrive the transmission functions normally but it uses much more gas.

Roger, that doesn't even make a whole lot of sense to me. If the overdrive is causing the transmission to slip, wouldn't it also cause the fuel mileage to go down? Are you sure the transmission is slipping? Or is the transmission simply shifting in and out of overdrive? If it is, is it shifting at the proper speeds? Driving at around 40 - 50 Mph will sometimes make the transmission go in and out of overdrive repeatedly. This can be perfectly normal.

Have you checked your transmission fluid level?

Is your overdrive off light flashing? If the transmission is actually slipping the OD OFF light should be blinking at you to let you know there is a transmission problem. Either that, or the Check Engine light will be coming on. In either of these cases, you need to scan your onboard computer network for possible fault codes.

How do i know if the transmission is going out?

Looking at the fuild is usually a good start, if it's not real red there could be a problem. Also the fluid having a burnt smell to it. Also, when driven, how does it shift? Does it slip into gear, or shift crisply? It should shift into overdrive around 45-50 mph.

I had the same problem, replacing you thermostat should do the trick, i spent 8.99 on a new thermostat and 99 cents on a seal. For some reason engine temperature affects the transmission shifting. Good luck

2002 Toyota Celica with a strange shifting problem.

Automatic transmission are complex systems. The shifting of gears is based on a number of things like bands, speed, acceleration, deceleration, manifold back pressure, RPMs, temperature, etc.
Sometimes the electrical ground connection for the transmission can become corroded which causes poor shifting.
Since you are getting an error code, you should get a readout for it. Many auto supply store like Advance Auto will loan a meter for you to get a readout. Call up some stores to find one.
