SOURCE: I have a 2002 yamaha kodiak 400. It wil idle, but

Hi Rick

If old gas has may have always kept in the carb over the winter or over time gas turns to a varnish like gooing,, when not Eng not running for a long time,,, and it may have plugged you Idle jet inside under the bow... whats happening its starving for fuel and that jet is not letting enough fuel through the Idling circuit of your Carb,, and wont Idle so putting your hand over the carb you are getter more fuel through cold start jets and circuits or you may even have water and dirt in the jets and bowl check you fuel tank if it fresh fuel check your fuel filter replace it if you going to clean out carb always use fuel stabilizer in your fuel tank just incase you dont get to fire it up some seasons , one other thing look for any vacuum lines off or loose carb bolts and screws. Bottom line time to blow out the carb and even sock t carb cleaner if real bad but you need to remove all rubber parts from Carb I would leave it just take bowl off remove jet and look for small passage ways in the jets u need a real thin stiff wire like they use for weldig torch tips find one that fits.

1988 k1500 backfires and almost dies when warmed up and on highway when giving more gas

Usually when you get a backfire thru the intake the problem is timing or a lean fuel mixture.
If you are sure the ignition system is in good condition, I would have the fuel pressure tested.
You could also have a vac leak that is random, or a problem with the throttle position sensor. But if the sensor has failed you should get a trouble code and check engine light.

Car Starts but wont go.

It could be a couple things. There may be a vaccuum leak in the fuel system such as a bad EGR or PCV valve or the throttle position sensor. I'm leaning towards the throttle position sensor needing replaced. The throttle position sensor reads how far you're pressing on the gas peddle and then feeds that to the computer telling it how much gas to feed to the engine. If that sensor isnt working right then your car will get enough gas to start and idle but will starve for gas as soon as you try drive and will then stall.
