"How much" is a trick question -- here are some links which will help.
Your pressures in the system are probably low and the low pressure switch has it cut off. Get some of that quick fill freon kit from autozone. Fill it. If compressor kicks in, then look for a leak. Your leaks will usually have a layer of dark oily substace that dirt gets stuck in. Hope that helps. The leak might be small enough that it dose not need repairs.
Start with is there freon or is it low on freon

thank you 4 the responses I had to jump the compressor clutch to add the ref. I added an 18 oz. can. When the clutch was jumped out with 12 V. everything worked and the system cooled but when hooked up normal the clutch will not kick on. I also checked for voltage on the wires to the clutch their was 12 V. but did not change when the a/c switch was turned on and off. I have been told that low ref. will not allow the clutch to turn on but how much does the system take?
in responce to all how answered this question took the truck to a dealer and had them hook it up for 35 dollars the results bad power module and compressor clutch dodge has had major problems with the power module and it costs 660 dollers and is back ordered till sept. if anybody has this problem look into the module maybe it could be a recall but i doubt it when dodge is bankrupt
Is system possibly low on refrigerant?
