The thermostat is located on the pass side of the engine. There are timing belt covers that need to be removed. In order to remove the thermostat normally the front bumper has to come off and the car has to be put into what audi calls service mode. This allows room to get to the timing belt components.
Agreed with auditech13 - you may as well do your timing belt at the same time, along with the related components, to save yourself from duplicating the labor charges later on when the t-belt is due. If you're in the NE US, I can do it for you for $600 including parts and labor (dealer gets $1100 or so typically).
