2003 mercedes C270 CDi auto gearbox fault

Stuck in 2nd or midrange gear until ignition switched off and then restarted. on advice garage changed oil and filter plus connector socket in gearbox which seemed ok for 50+ miles now stuck totally any ideas? thanks in anticipation

Mercedes c220 cdi 2004 140k done gets stuck in gear then have to turn of ignition to get it working again. had recently had the gearbox serviced

Had exact same prob.it was the battery going off full power & not sendind right signal to computer.fitted new batt & hey presto.

Check with STAR DIAGNOSIS the transmision because is posible sensor N2 -N3 IS FAULT electronical plate from valve body ,check the OIL inside the antifreeze because engine 2,7 have trouble with radiator antifreeze

I'"ve had the same problem with my 1996 c180 the oil and filter change did"nt help,this is common with the 5 speed automatic .I'm a truck mechanic ,Mercs are no longer what they were. Shame but thats why Lexus sells so many cars

if its auto the radiator is gone its letting coolant in there though the pipes on the side of the radiator there is no cheap remedy u have to get a second or brand new radiatior

There is a hole on the side of the gearbox that generally has a large hexagonal socket hole in it. You remove that fill plug and fill it until it starts to dribble out of the hole.

It might be.
You should first change the gearbox oil and replace the gearbox oil filter, then retry.
If you are still having an issue, then check the vehicle's speed sensor and TCM.

I have a 12/2000 grandure, it sticks in 3rd gear of the auto trans, but only when it has warmed up, u can reset it by stopping turning the ignition off and re starting, but only until it hits third gear...


Time for a gearbox oil change. As the oil gets older it breaks down and that means it heats up too quickly, meaning it will not allow the auto to change gears properly. As you have switched the engine off and restarted it tricks the ECU into thinking that the gearbox oil is cold until it reaches too high levels.

Change the oil soon as an auto box rebuild isn't cheap.

Sounds like the transmission is stuck in "Limp Home " mode. Does it reset when you turn off the ignition ?
If it does most likely you have a typical problem of oil in the wiring loom, it seeps through the gearbox connector and through capillary action ends up in the transmission control unit. Sometimes cleaning it up with electrical cleaner works. They sell a kit to prevent it happening in the future, simple to fix.
If it doesn't reset it could still be the above problem.Best get it to a dealer or a good indie with diagnostic software. Its unlikely to be a transmission fault.

I have a Mercedes 220 CDI Auto Elagance saloon.The man took my car for an MOT and returned it as passed. This morning I drove off and it appears to be stuck in 2nd gear as it won't change up. The...


first.the mot is a govenment safety check,it is not a mechanical/electrical fitness test.so it passed an mot.....
now the gearbox W is for winter setting,it allows the car to pull away in 2nd gear and change slightly higher,NOTHING ELSE.
the gearchange has nothing to do with cruise control..or vice versa...
if the car wont go into/allow you to change then either its the selector plate or the gearbox inhibitor at fault......could go anytime.

Bit of a long shot, but check the output of the throttle position sensor with a multimeter.

Also, check that the low range switch isn't continually reporting that you are in low range. The gearbox computer adopts a VERY harsh shift pattern in low range, holding gears until approx. 3500 RPM and even then producing very hard shifts.

Try unplugging the connector that carries the low range sense signal from the transfer box under the vehicle and see if that makes a difference.

Cant get 1st gear. 2nd gear nosiey and crunches, 3rd 4th 5th work but wine alot, reverse works fine. reverse lights stay on when driving. car is a mitsubishi gto twin turbo AWD 1991 plate.


Sorry but it sounds like it is trassmission time. you see the 3-5 gears work on another ration thatn 1& second they are on one shaft. the reverse is off in another world. sounds like one of the rods go stuck this is why the reverse lights stay on...

Hold your breath. It will be expensive but then on a manual I would see if the repair shop will find a used tranny. for 1/2 the cost..
