SOURCE: I need to replace a glow plug on my 2002 Jetta TDI.

I'm not sure about a 2002, but I have a 2003 and we didn't have to take off the engin coolant temp. sensor. We needed the #4 glow plug replaced and this is how we did it. We took off the motor cover by undoing the threee bolts, then there is a rubber "bar" across in front of the injectors.. pull these up one by one by holding onto the ends and there you will find the glow plugs. You will need a 10mm deep socket to undo these. We replaced the last one on the right ( thinking that it would be the #4) wrong... the firing order is 1342 but the last one one the right is not #4, so to make sure that they wore evenly we replaced all four of them. When you have tightened in the glow plug(s) make sure you put the rubber plug end on with a "snap". Replace everything that you took off and put the motor cover back on. This worked for us hopefully for you, too.

SOURCE: MY GLOW PLUG LIGHT IS FLASHING IN MY DASH BOARD VW

Despite what you may read from other comments....The glow plug light is simple a multi function warning light and IS among many othed things in fact used to warn of brake light and brake light switch failure. Therefore it can NOT be treated as glow plug problems only.
I have worked on V.W for many years and have encountered this problem many times. You should get the OBD codes read. This will reveal the exact problem...and there may be more than one
You can contact your V,W agents if you wish and check to see if I am correct.
Best of luck
John

I am assuming by the glow plugs you have a TDI 1.9... Check fuses. One panel is located on top of the battery, the other is just inside the driver's door. With the key on check that all fuses have power on both sides. You'll need a test light.

Golfs have a 'Heater' fuse which is a metal strip labeled 55 or 80 amps located under a clear plastic cover. There is also a glow plug relay in the fuse block but that would not turn on the glow indicator if it died.

If light is on at start up its usually a glow plug gone .Won't make any differance to driving. You should get a diagnostic scan done which will tell you which plug is at fault.

No glows plugs on a vw passat from cold

I have an older VW and it has a fuse(not a normal looking fuse) for the glow plugs. Start at the glow plug wire and follow it back to Hopefully the fuse check for voltage on both sides, sometimes the fuse will look good but it is not.

Turbo lag and lack of power

Hi,
This is the second Vw I have responded to in a fortnight.
Your lack of power I presume always happens when the glow plug light illuminates?
This is because it is causing over combustion to vaporised diesel, I would be looking in the Glow plug timer and relay, as for Turbo lag, I run a E34 6 cyl Bmw Diesel and the Turbo only kicks in around 2,500ish so maybe yours is a little tired or in need of a check up?
Hope this helped,
Paul 'W'
