Problem with 1996 GEO Will not spin the motor sometimes

This is a Tracker that will spin the motor and start most times. Occasionally it will not turn the motor over when the ignition key is turned to START. The battery has been replaced as well as the battery cable to the ground. The positive lead has had all the battery connector replaced at the same time. The leads were replaced or repaired when it started this. I think the problem might be in the Starter Relay shown on page 6D2-2 of volume 1. The relay is shown as item 7. The problem I have is that the electrical diagnosis on pare 8A30-1 Volume 2 does not show such a relay as existing. Also, none other diagnostics pages show or mention such a relay. I do not understand. Does anyone know what I am talking about??? The pages mentioned here are from the Factory Service Manual for the 1996 GEO Tracker.

All of my diagrams show no starter relay. All the starters I have ever seen have either a solenoid or a relay ( essentially the same thing ) never both. You may be thinking the relay is a neutral safety switch or a clutch safety switch. The starter circuit is relatively easy to diagnose, watch some instructional videos on utube or something. Your overthinking it. I really think your having a starter solenoid of ignition switch problem. Sorry I can't do long distance circuit testing unless you have a test light and an understanding of a multimeter.

If the starter does not engage periodically the problem is probably either the starter or the switch. The switch activates a solenoid on the starter that takes over the job of the high amp. Draw of the starter. You won't be able to change the solenoid so the stater assembly will need to be replaced. This is my best advice without knowing more symptoms.

jagornot, Ok, but what about the relay Starter Relay shown on page 6D2-2 of volume 1 of the FSM? It is shown to be in the battery positive wiring for the Starter Solenoid. I can not find where it is.

Watch and listen as you turn the switch. Do the dash lites change the same each time? Do you hear a click, which would be the start relay? If these changes and noises don't always happen the same, the ignition switch is wearing out.

SOURCE: my truck wont start

Pull the small wire off the relay and have someone else turn the key to start position and check for voltage on that small wire, if there is no voltage present your problem may be the ignition switch mounted on the colum under the dash.

SOURCE: where is the starter relay on a 94 Honda Accord

Yes, it sounds like your solenoid is bad and staying engaged against the flywheel, you could do an amperage draw and a voltage drop test to find out for sure, but you will need an DVOM and a amp clamp. Or you could take it into an auto parts store and they will test it for free. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: replaced battery, starter, 91 geo will not

The easiest way to check and see if it is the ignition switch or relay is to find the small stator wire on the starter not the one from the battery but the small one on the side of it on starter turn the key on and see if it is sending power to that wire if it is then the ignition switch and relay are good. Also check and make sure you are getting a full 12 volts on the battery cable to the starter and to the stator wire when switch is on. If you are not getting the full 12 volts or nothing at all then the switch is bad. But is could also be in the computer friend has a 92 dakota that was doing the same thing and his computer was bad.

will not crank over?
or will not start.?
cranks is first.
the word "turn over:" means nothing
as the starter can spin and the crank shaft can stay dead.
tis a fact.

does the crank shaft spin robustly , cranked.

Why would fuel system fuse blow in a 1996 Tracker 4 Door ? It seem's to blow immediately when I try to start the vehicle.

the fuel pump circuit has a short in it. either the wiring or the pump motor. if you can disconnect the pump motor, try turning the ignition to the on position to see if the fuse blows. this will tell you if the motor is bad or the wiring is bad. if the fuse doesn't blow suspect the pump.

96 geo tracker will start on time and not the

You didn't indicate that the starter turns over slow--that would be a strong indication of a bad battery, but if so, check your battery. If your battery is more than three years old, replace it. If the battery is good and you still have problems it could be a starter problem.

When i start my 92 geo tracker, it starts fine but about 5 seconds later, the idle drops significantly. enough so, that the car sometimes (usually) stalls and i have to restart it. it also stalls...

this is cause because the ISC is busted or can not open enough to keep idle at 800 rpm.

ISC , idle speed controller

but....
the car has a TPS switch on the throttle body.
if it fails to close at idle the ecu will never attempt to set idle.

or
car could be flooding. (too much gas)

you did not say if motor is 8valve or 16v and they are quite different EFI systems.
