Headlights Dimming issue

At nights whenever I turn my fog lights on, the headlights dim. Any thoughts on why this happens?

Hi there, I'm so sorry but that does not make any sense. I must have done a poor job explaining my issue. By dim I mean weak. The headlights are no longer bright. At nights when I have the headlights on, if I choose to turn on the fog-lights, the headlights become weak and don't shine. They no longer have the brightness. This does not happen to any of my other cars.

You must have either a bad ground connection , or your voltage regulator is not doing its job.

Check all your connections, even at the battery.

Fog lights will only work when headlights are on dim.

SOURCE: dimming lights and voltage drop

Its not unusual to have a sudden drop of volts. especially if you have something running like your a/c or heater that requires a lot of power to run. it will also do it when your fan kicks in. anything that requires power is going to kick down your voltage. i would not worry about it unless the battery starts to die overnight.

I would pull the main headlight switch out and check it for burning, that is the most common issue for this type of problem with the headlights coming and going.

Your charging system appears to be fluctuating. May be time for a new Alternator. OR You have a poor battery connection affecting the alternator.

Lights dimming

My first thought:

This is caused by an electrical short circuit which is putting a big load on the alternator. The short could be pretty much anywhere -- the headlights would be one possibility.

The short may get worse and could possibly disable the vehicle.
I think you need a good mechanic.

the fog lights and the headlights work together. the fog light switch is in the on off switch for the headlights push the knob would be pulled out for your fog lights and pushed in for your headlights and just turn to on position
