Old, start up fine one out the blue wont start seem to be fuel pump change fuel pump with gm brand 3- times i thought it might be a bad ground

The standard drill is : spark, fuel, timing. Pull a plug wire to test for spark. Give a shot of ether to see if it runs on that.
Cars nowadays don't have much timing anymore, some don't even have distributors. A computer runs it all.
To check the computer, you need a code checker.

have you checked out the core packs? and if you go to autozone you can get a printed diagram where the crankcase sensor is located also look for the location normally under the hood for the fuel pump relay

Check to make sure the Security light in dash on right hand corner is not on. If it is on , your passlock is enabled. to dissable it turn your key on but not start it and wait for apx 10-15 minutes. this should re-set it.

the enginr oil pressure switch runs the fuel pump till the oil pressure is up to the normal operating range. When the pressure is up the relay kicks in and takes over the power to the pump. The oil pressure switch my be at fault if you can no hear the pump running when you turn the key on

its an old car, and most fail this old. "entropy"
first off, 3 things must be good on this old engine.
1: compression. at above 150 psi, 180 warm not 80.
if compression is low an all 4 cylinders (G16b engine) the cam belt slipped, do to owers not changing belt at 60,000 miles !
2: bad spark, test for spark at all 4 cylinder yet? if bad spark
use a scan tool and see why, cranking for 5 seconds. P03xx errors?
at this point the engine runs on test fuel. does it?

3: bad fueling , too much or too little or none)
is engine flooding, spark tips wet,
no dry, and test fuel runs car for 3 seconds.
ok that means the pump is dead, or weak
caused by (again a real 60k tuneup skipped, the filter)
replace filter. omg got 30psi pump pressure,
lets say pump pressure is still weak, lets say 15psi, (failed)
i check pump voltage cranking, omg, got 8v. the wires
behind left rear tail light (2door) pink wires or ground there bad.
ok got 12vdc to pump. but is weak
i then check FPR, fuel pump reg on fuel rail. i find it is stuck wide open, a new FPR gets pressure to 30 running and 40 not running.
fixed.
no the FPR is ok, the pump is bad. (last, pumps is last in my book as the work is long and hard, and why do that if , its not bad. as most all seem to do on forums.)

no start has 50 causes.

we dont know what checked filter and pump means.
1: filter is there and looks pretty?
2: pump makes noise?
we use a fuel pressure gauge for 20 bucks.

all 9 pump tests are here, and the there tests for injector leakdown
and injector balance tests. all off one tool.
not starting can even be, leaking injector, folding 1 cylinder bad.

This is something that you cannot afford to throw any more money at. Get a timing light to check to see if there is spark. Use a pressure guage to check fuel pump. Get bug lights to test injectors.

I have a Toyota Picnic (UK) '98 2 litre MPV.We have an intermittant problem,where it,ll be fine for months we will park up somewhere, on returning it just wont start.Its fuel injected,fuel is being pumped...


Do not mess with the ECU, they rarely go bad, and are very expensive. It sounds like you have low fuel pressure at the fuel pump. The age of your car warrants replacing, the fuel pump, the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel filter. These 3 parts do not handle water in the fuel very well (METHYNOL In the fuel equals water)

Sounds like you are loosing fuel pressure overnight. Could be a fuel pump problem, or a leaking injector.

98 Olds 88 starting problem


Update--after getting car back from 3rd shop, it ran flawlessly for about a week or ten days. Then started doing it again. I decided to do some more troubleshooting myself. While trying to track down the components of the fuel pump electrical circuit, I did quite a bit of wire wiggling at the firewall and inside behind the glove box (the location of the fuel pump relay on this car). I had a buddy turn key to "on" while listening for the fuel pump relay to click. When he did, the fuel pump ran 2-3 seconds just like its supposed to. The car started right up, and has ran since---two weeks now. My problem definitely now looks like a short in the wiring somewhere in the fuel pump circuitry. Next time it does it, I'll try to further narrow down the area of the problem. I found this one basically by accident.

Hard start sometimes wont start after fuel pump was replaced


Replace the fuel filter before the pump goes bad, just paid $700 to replace OEM withan aftermarket fuel pump and filter (better than $900 quoted by another shop. Had I changed the filter sooner, may have avoided. Now dealing with a bad intake mfld gsked and old leaking oil cooler lines. Help, GM is killing me!! These vehicles are notorious for various issues.

you do know all gm motors are haunted by a problem called fuel lock .it is a pressure lock just behind intake line feeding fuel.gm has claimed to have gotten rid of this problem but i still see it from time to time.try changing fuel pump

BE WARNED!!! i was a GM mechanic for years, i personally found out for myself, that many if those pumps bought from parts stores auto zone, orielly's, napa, etc... have the possibility of being bad from the factory, i once worked on a 98 silverado, the customer had replaced the pump 3 times with an auto zone pump, every time the pump would either not even start the truck or it would loose pressure within a week or two. after we installed a new GM pump he no longer had an issue, sometimes its worth it to pay a little bit more and buy a pump from a dealer, plus if you buy a GM part, it comes with a 5 year 100,000 mile warranty, even if you buy it over the counter and install it yourself.
