How to Replace a Distributor Cap in Toyota?


Its a plastic cap and and on its top the sparks wires get connected.A small plastic rotor spins inside the distributor cap, firing each spark plug as it rotates. If the distributor gets faulty there the engine may not perform well. in most cases it has been noticed that only replacing the cap does not helps but with cap the rotors also need to be replaced. The procedure is as follows:--- 1) First of all disconnect the negative battery terminal. 2) Then remove the spark-plug wires . Note:-- Before removing the spark plug wires please note down how and where the wires are connected,then only remove the connections. 3) Then on the distributor there will be a cap.remove that cap.the cap is connected by two pins.you will have to press the pins from each side to loosen the distributor cap.Then lift the distributor cap from the top. 4)Then remove the rotor From distributor The rotor is fitted with two screws.Remove the screws and loosen the rotor. 5) Then lift the rotor out from its shaft. 6) To install new rotor and cap.reverse the procedure. 1985 GMC k2500 with a distributor cap where is the ignition coil located.


It should be located in the top of the distributor cap.

Hopefully this will give you an idea as to what the cap looks like WITHOUT the coil installed.

Hi there;This is for a 2000 Nissan Truck Pathfinder 4WD 3.3L SFI 6cyl


Distributor Cap & Rotor - Removal & Installation


NOTE
The 1996-00 3.3L engines were equipped with a distributor.


Disconnect the negative battery cable.
If the distributor cap is to be replaced, mark the ignition wires for identification and remove them from the distributor cap.
Remove any components necessary to access the distributor cap.
Completely loosen the distributor cap mounting fasteners.
Carefully remove the distributor cap, taking care not to damage the cap seal or rotor, then position the cap aside.
If necessary, remove the rotor retainer.
Carefully lift the rotor off the distributor shaft.
NOTE
Inspect the distributor cap to housing seal for damage and/or cracks. Replace if cracks are detected.




To install:


Install the rotor onto the distributor shaft and tighten the rotor mounting fastener, if equipped.
Position the distributor cap seal on the distributor housing, then position the distributor cap on the housing.
Install the distributor cap by tightening the mounting fasteners in a crisscross pattern. Use care to not over-tighten the fasteners.
Reconnect the spark plug wires, making sure to install them exactly in the same position from which they were removed.
Reconnect the negative battery cable.

Not sure how to replce spark plug wires from the distributor need help please send info


change one spark wire at a time on the distributor.buy new set of spark plugs wires remove them from box.match old wires with new wires to use the correct length to each cylinder.now if you need to change distributor cap.mark location distributor cap.number tag plug wires on the distributor cap so you can remove plug wires on distributor cap so you can replace cap and rotor and put wires back on the distributor cap in correct place.remember change one plug wire at a time so you wont get confuse.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the distributor wire(s) at its harness. Loosen the screws holding the cap onto the housing 88272p05.jpg

  3. On the 4A-F engines, disconnect the vacuum advance hoses. NOTE: On some models the distributor wires are part of the cap and can not be separated.
  4. Remove the distributor cap. Label and disconnect the wires from the cap. On some engines it will be necessary to use a flat bladed tool to lift up the lock claw and disconnect the holder from the cap. Fig. 5: On some engines, use a flat bladed tool to lift up the lock claw to disconnect the holder from the distributor cap 88272g45.gif

  5. Carefully note the position of the distributor rotor relative to the distributor housing (also note position of distributor to the engine assembly); a mark made on the casing/housing will be necessary for reassembly. Use a marker or tape so the mark doesn't rub off during handling of the case/housing. Mark the position of the rotor relative to the distributor housing 88272p07.jpg
    Label and remove all vacuum hoses attached to the advance on the distributor if equipped 88272p14.jpg

How do you change the distributor on a 1997 Nissan pick-up?


  1. Remove the two (2) screws securing the distributor cap and remove the cap.
  2. Remove the bolt securing the distributor.
  3. Disconnect the crank angle sensor connector and remove the distributor.

  2. Install the distributor securing bolt and tighten slightly.
  3. Connect the crank angle sensor terminal.
  4. Install the distributor cap and tighten the screws

5.2L and 5.9L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires from the distributor cap and coil
  3. Remove the distributor cap retaining hooks or screws and remove the distributor cap.
  4. Note the position of the rotor in relation to the base. Scribe a mark on the base of the distributor and on the engine to facilitate reinstallation.

The distributor must be bright to Top Dead Center (TDC) before removal.
  1. Attach a socket to the crankshaft damper retaining bolt and slowly rotate the engine clockwise until the indicating mark on the crankshaft damper is aligned with the 0 degree mark on the timing chain cover. The distributor rotor should now be aligned to the CYL. NO 1 alignment mark stamped into the camshaft position sensor. If not repeat the process until TDC is achieved.
  2. Disengage the camshaft position sensor connector and remove the rotor.
  3. Unfasten the distributor hold-down bolt and remove the distributor and hold-down clamp.

Just got answer from Matthew about replacing distributor cap on 1999 Sebring. Thanks, but what I really needed to know is if the intake manifold and all the other parts that eneded to com off to replace 3...


Not sure about your engine size so please pick your model:

2.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Bolt holding air inlet resonator to intake manifold.
    • Clamps holding air cleaner cover to air cleaner housing.
    • PCV make-up air hose from air inlet tube.
    • Hose clamp at throttle body.
    • Air inlet tube, resonator and air cleaner cover.
    • EGR tube.
    • Spark plug cables from distributor cap.
  3. Loosen distributor cap hold down screws and remove cap
    NOTE The rotor is friction-fitted to the distributor shaft and can be pulled straight off.

  4. Transfer cables from old cap to new cap. The cap and cables are numbered with their corresponding cylinder numbers.

Distributor cap—2.5L and 3.0L Engines

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Distributor cap.
    • Distributor holddown washers and nuts and torque to 9 ft. lbs (13 Nm)
    • EGR tube.
    • Air inlet tube, resonator and air cleaner cover.
    • Hose clamp at throttle body.
    • PCV make-up air hose from air inlet tube.
    • Clamps holding air cleaner cover to air cleaner housing and securely tighten.
    • Bolt holding air inlet resonator to intake manifold and securely tighten.


3.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Air cleaner
    • Spark plug cables from distributor cap.
  3. Loosen distributor cap hold down screws and remove cap
    NOTE The rotor is friction-fitted to the distributor shaft and can be pulled straight off.

  4. Transfer cables from old cap to new cap. The cap and cables are numbered with their corresponding cylinder numbers.
To install:

    • Distributor cap locating tab. This tab assures proper location of the cap onto the distributor housing.
    • Distributor cap holddown. The distributor cap must be securely attached to the distributor housing to prevent contamination and to assure its location.
    • Dirt and water in the cap. These contaminants will require additional voltage in order to fire the spark plug. If available voltage is not enough to overcome this resistance then no spark will occur at the spark plug.
    • Center carbon insert. All of the high voltage coming through the coil on its way to the spark plug must pass through this insert. Any additional resistance caused by wear or contamination can cause the engine not to start or to misfire.
    • Tower inserts. The inserts are made from aluminum or bass so it is possible for them to oxidize. Aluminum oxide is an abrasive that can cause excessive damage to the distributor. If the insert is made from brass then the oxidation will appear green in color.
    • Cracks. If any cracks are present on the distributor cap then replacement of the part is required.
    • Carbon tracking. Carbon tracking indicates that the high-voltage of electricity has found a low-resistance conductive path over or through the plastic. The result is a cylinder that fires at the wrong time, or a misfire.
    Also check for:
    • Physical or electrical damage is easily recognizable.
    • Electrical damage from high voltage can include corroded or burned metal terminals and carbon tracking inside distributor caps.

    Things to look for when inspecting a distributor cap.
    • If the distributor cap has a mild buildup of dirt or corrosion, it should be cleaned. If it cannot be cleaned up, it should be replaced. Small round brushes are available to clean cap terminals.
    • Wipe the cap and with a clean shop towel, but avoid cleaning these components in solvent or blowing them off with compressed air, which may contain moisture. Cleaning these components with solvent or compressed air may result in high-voltage leaks.
    • Check the distributor cap and housing vents. Make sure they are not blocked or clogged. If they are, the internal ignition module will overheat. It is good practice to check these vents whenever a module is replaced.
    Replace Distributor cap replacement instructions vary, so always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
    General replacement procedures are as follows:
    • For spring-loaded caps, unsnap the clips and remove the cap. When installing the new cap, make sure the clips are snapped back into place.
    • For spring-loaded j-hook caps, push down and turn. It will unlock. Lift up to remove it. Position the new cap in place, then push down and turn to lock.
    • For caps with screws, use a screwdriver to loosen the two screws. Install the new cap and use the screwdriver to tighten the screws. Don't overtighten.
    It is a good idea when replacing the distributor cap to remove the cap with the ignition wires attached. After you have installed the new cap, transfer the wires one by one onto the cap in their correct position. This way the firing order is accurate. If, for some reason after you replace the distributor cap, your vehicle does not function normally, check your firing sequence.
    The distributor cap is mounted on top of the distributor assembly and an alignment notch in the cap fits over a matching lug on the housing. Therefore the cap can only be installed in one position, which assures the correct firing sequence. There is a tab or notch somewhere on the distributor body that must align somewhere on the distributor body that must align with a corresponding tab or notch in the cap. Once again, do not force something.
    The rotor should be inspected and/or replaced when the distributor cap is replaced.

    Firing Order Each cylinder of an engine must produce power once in every 720 degrees of crankshaft rotation. Each cylinder must have a power stroke at its own appropriate time during the rotation. To make this possible, the pistons and rods are arranged in a precise fashion. This is called the engine's firing order. The firing order is arranged to reduce rocking and imbalance problems. Because the potential for this rocking is determined by the design and construction of the engine, the firing order varies from engine to engine. Vehicle manufacturers simplify cylinder identification by numbering each cylinder.

    Regardless of the particular firing order used, the #1 cylinder always starts the firing order, with the rest of the cylinders following in a fixed sequence. The ignition system must be able to monitor the rotation of the crankshaft and the relative position of each piston to determine which piston is on its compression stroke. It must also be able to deliver a high-voltage surge to each cylinder at the proper time during its compression stroke. How the ignition system does these things depends on the design of the system.
