Question about Volkswagen Golf

1 Answer

Sticking in reverse

My golf sticks in reverse gear from time to time and the only way to release is to depress and release quickly on the clutch whilst pushing into neutral. Is this a common fault and is there a remedy? The garage I bought car from has had a look at it twice without solving the problem.

Sounds like clutch is worn out or too much slop in the clutch cable. Check the play on the clutch pedal, and if it is good - might need to have the clutch replaced.

I just put a new slave cylinder and clutch master cylinder on a 2003 Honda accord 3.0 V6 six speed and you can shift the gears without the clutch pedal pushed in or the car started

that is normal if the gear synchro dogs ( teeth) are in line in the box
problems concerning a clutch are
slashing gears when trying to engage first or reverse with the pedal to the floor ---needs bleeding
slipping when the clutch pedal is released--- slipping clutch from the pressure not being released ---problem in master cylinder
reverse gear is the only gear not synchronised so even with the clutch depressed it is possible sometimes that it will not go into gear unless you let the clutch up to move the gears in the box then attempt to re-engage reverse

Revs high when i change gear

Is it possible the clutch pedal is interfering with the throttle? Start the engine in neutral and allow it to idle. Press only the clutch pedal down and see if this increase the engine speed. If it does speed up the engine and slows back down when you release the clutch then somehow this operation is where your fault lies. If it doesn't alter the idle speed, then rev your engine and release the throttle to see if it returns to idle immediately. If it is slow to return to idle then your throttle cable could be sticking. This means when you change gear lifting off the throttle has little effect and depressing the clutch to change gear causes the engine to race as the throttle is still partially open.

My 87 Mazda B2000 has been parked down hill for 3 months. Now the motor starts but I cannot put it in any gear with the motor on. The stick shift will move into gears with the engine off.

sounds like the clutch has corroded somewhat.
does it feel like the clutch has some pressure?
try putting it in gear, depress the clutch, and then see if it will start in gear( be carefull it may jump forward)
this might free the clutch.
also the clutch fluid may have drained or have an air bubble, depressing the clutch many times quickly may self bleed the air out, or bleed some new fluid through it. make sure to top up the fluid.

When reversing it jumps out of gear. is it the engine mount

Is this an automatic or stick?
Automatic problem could be cable or clutch adjustment.
Stick, could be sychronizer for reverse ,defective shift fork,,gear is worn.

Clutch sticking/not releasing/engaging

Is it sticking to the floor? releasing/engaging?

If its not releasing the clutch...[Car will try to move when starting with car in gear]
If so check the fluid. this is a hydraulic clutch,
If fluid is gone check for a leak or a bad Clutch Master Cylinder

If its not engaging then the Clutch maybe bad.

1989 Toyota Camry

Hi,

On an 89 Toyota Camry with manual transmission, two possible reasons:
  • clutch;
  • release bearing
Try bleeding the clutch on the slave cylinder. If this does not prove to be corrective, you may have to have the transmission/clutch checked/repaired/replaced. In some instances, it could just be a sticking release bearing or clutch fork.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
