Wipers won't work on 2001 Altima

My 2001 Altima wipers won't work when I turn the switch. But they work when I pull the handle to squirt windshield fluid.

The switch is on the end of the lever. When I pull the switch to engage the wiper fluid, the wipers work, like they should. But when I turn the switch to use the wipers normally, they won't work.

Do I jsst pull until it breaks away from the lever. Then how/what do I clean

Thanks for the help. I'll give it a try.

Before you do anything, you will have to disconnect the battery and wait about 10 minutes for any capacitors to discharge!

You do not want the SRS (AIRBAG) to go off.
Also if you have an anti-thief device installed, make sure it will not lock-up if the battery is disconnected.

Without actually seeing it I can't say for sure. But prying/popping it apart sounds like it would work. You will see copper contacts when you get it apart -- they're probably dull/burned -- clean w/ sandpaper/alcohol.

Caution: If you've never done this kind of work, you'll find it takes a lot of finesse -- I can't be responsible if you break something. Years of experience are sometimes required to successfully pull off a job like this. But, you don't learn if you never try. So, it's up to you. Worst that could happen is you'll have to take it to the shop -- which is where you would have been anyway, probably.

Sounds like a bad switch for sure. Probably just needs cleaning. Can you get it apart?

  • marionbagget May 11, 2010

Sounds like the switch in the lever is bad.

Sounds like a faulty wiper switch -- what type is it? Wher is it mounted?

The WS wipers in this truck are controlled by a central module that is called the GEM, this module can be scanned to find the fault wirththe wipers, it could be the GEM that is defective or the wiper motor is defective. It also controls the WS washers do they work?

Windshield Wipers on 2007 Altima Quit on High

It might be either switch itself or wiper relay.
Ufortunatly I don't know location of the relay.
You can actually find relay by noise , put the switch on intermittent position and see where the cliking coming from.

My windshield wipers work but I cant squirt windshield cleaner

it's likely the tiny motor/pump located at the bottom of the tank that has failed. to confirm this have some turn on the washer fluid switch and test for voltage at the pump. there are several aftermarket pumps you can use as a replacement.

My son has a 2001 Nissan Altima. The wipers will

First thing i would do is unhook electrical plug to wiper motor and use a test light and see if it lights when you turn on switch and light goes out when you turn switch off. That way you know if its the switch or not. The wiper motor most likely is the culpret it has a printed circete in it thats went bad hense why it keeps running.

On my 850 the headlight wipers come on the same time as my windshield wipers when I pull the lever to squirt washer fluid on my windshield.
The back wiper should be on an independent switch.
