Question about 2003 Dodge Stratus

Engine cranks but car does not start.

Charged battery overnight, and power to headlights/accessories is good. Fuel smells rich after I attempt to start it. I can hear the fuel pump engage when I turn key to ON position.

Hi Tim Weniger, I want to help you with your problem, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box? Specifically, let me know if the engine cranks, but won't start, or if when you turn the key it's silent (the engine doesn't crank). Thanks.

Engine cranks very roughly for a few times, causing car to shudder. Then on the 4th time, I hear the fast clicking noise and the engine has lost enough power to barely crank engine.

I am in the process of removing my battery so that I can get it tested at Advanced Auto.I cleaned out the throttle body and even sprayed Ether into the throttle body and air cleaner area. I tapped the gas tank where I thought the fuel pump was located. I was going to pull my spark plugs next.

Could this possibly be a starter issue, or ignition switch malfunction?

I think you're heading down the right path by testing out the battery. If you can try jumpstarting it that will tell you too. Let us know what testing the battery shows (or jumpstarting)

I have already tried jumpstarting and it cranked close to starting. I have removed the battery. Did a "floating balls" dropper test on each cell. 5 cells checked good, but one negative cell is almost dead. Will take the battery to Advanced to have it tested on their machine.

SOURCE: no power to fuel pump

You need to follow a detailed troubleshooting procedure in a repair manual.
Check for spark plug fire during cranking after it dies.
No spark = ignition problem= computer will not fire injectors, and possibly cut out pump also.
Good spark = pump wonky, or power to pump system.
Also, other quick tests... when the thing dies, and then you crank,
1) Thump the fuel pump in the tank, if you can. A bad fuel pump might start up again.
2) Shoot some ether carb cleaner in the TB. If it only fires off the ether, the ignition system is no longer suspect.

SOURCE: My 2002 Dodge Neon will not start. I have changed the plugs...

HEY! I JUST changed my camshaft sensor and crankshaft sensor yesterday and I had the EXACT same problem. Now it starts right up for me perfectly, BUT I now have ANOTHER issue. The Engine seems to have lost all power, it will hardly move when it is put in gear, I'm lucky if I can go above 5MPH!

But yea, if your check engine light is on, turn your key(don't try to start it) back and forth 3 times, once you have turned the key the third time, you SHOULD get a code you can look up in the repair manual. The code will either be a readable code: ei P01684, which is the code for battery disconnection, or your check engine light will flash a series of times, stop, then flash again. Depends on your dashboard. If you have the electronic mileage meter, you will get the readable code. If you are unsure of how to perform this very simple home diagnostics test, you can also RENT the actual plug in tester from AutoZone or Advanced Auto Parts. I hope this helps you, I figured my problem out the hard way ei MECHANIC= EXPENSIVE!

Check fuel pump

Is your battery adequate ... at 7 below? Normally, the fuel pump will engage when the ignition switch is first turned to the ON position - without starting the engine.
Does the starter motor turn over the engine?
Has your fuel gauge been malfunctioning?

Any water in the gasoline would freeze at -7, preventing the fuel pump from being able to function if the water / ice is in the fuel pump

The girlfriend was riving my 2002 xterra. she said it run out of gas it now has about three gallons of gas, all the lights work, i can hear the fuel pump engage but the starter will not. I tried unhooking...

what do you mean by the starter will not. do you mean engage turn over or does it turn over and wont start because the fuel pump and starter have nothing in common. first of all what were your codes set and second if it turns over see if you can smell full and third if it doesn't engage at all she probally ran the battery down so try charging your batt or you can put a dvom meter on it and it should read 12.6 volts full charged 12.4 3/4 12.3 50% which will not start the car so if its any thing below 12.3 charge the batt . 2003 suburban has been siting for 3 years and now won't start. I can hear fuel pump working when key is ON. Battery is charged. What could it be? It cranks over like no fuel or spark getting to it

If it's been sitting for 3 years I would do as follows
1. Drain tank of all gas, give it some fresh gas.
2. Change the Spark Plugs
Attempt to start it. (Keep in mind it may take a few times to get all that old gas out of the lines)
Sitting it the worst thing for a rig. I advise never let it go without starting it ATLEAST once a month
If that doesn't work make sure it is getting fuel to the motor.
If so it could be your Distributor or Coil. Good luck

My 199 chevy s10 wont start for some reason. battery/starter are good. cannot smell feul when peddle is pumped from engine. attempted to start with starter fluid but would not start.

Most likely its the fuel-pump; have someone turn the power on while you listen for the fuel-pump to come on when you have the gas-cap off. Just put your ear next to the gas-filer-tube and see if you can hear a buzzing noise come on when the power is turned on and the motor is not spinning.
I would ask the dealer if it has a fuel saftey shut off switch. That switch shuts the fuel-pump off after the first hit in an accident. Its a safety feature.

I have replaced the starter and had the battery rated (good). Still when I turn the key I hear a constant clicking sound. Wonm't crank over. The headlights work fine.

There are some possibilities which you will have to check in this case:--
1) First of all check the power and voltage to the battery. With meter it will show exact 12 volt if the battery is charged. If the voltage is less get the battery charged at local auto repair shop. If the battery is internally drained and not getting charged then its time to replace the battery.
2) When you crank the car do you see spark coming at the spark plug? If no then its time to check the spark plugs and coil pack. If the spark plugs are not worn out and looks new then its time to check coil pack. The spark plug gets power to spark from coil pack.
3) The other thing to check in this case is the starter solenoid of the car. If the battery is charged and you start the car then it gives power to the starter to start the car. But if starter is faulty or not connected properly then car will not start.
4) The other thing to check in this case is fuel in the car. If there is fuel in the car then check the blockages in the fuel pump if the fuel pump looks proper then check the fuel filter above the fuel pump.
5) If all the above possibilities mentioned above checked out OK/perfect then it’s a electrical issue and the wiring's in the car needs to be checked. The car gets power from the battery to get started. so the wires from battery needs to be checked one by one.

Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Have you checked that you have power to the coil on cranking? You may also want to check wether you have a good strong spark at the spark plug.It could be an ignition module breaking down.If you have no power to the coil you may need to change the ignition relay. Its close to the battery.
