Honestly? Cruddy parts.

I have a Dodge Stratus....97....same thing here. Unfortunately, shoddy parts, even from the dealership. I think the best thing is to keep a fresh one on hand. I know that the wiring is garbage too due to how the harness curls up to the sensor. Not much to tell you on this one.

I had this problem with my 99 Durango and went to to discover this was a major problem with 98 & 99 Durangos. The fix was easy -- PCM "brain" was exchanged with a refurbished PCM "brain" from an online PCM company in Florida. You can google as I can't remember name of company. I called them and they said - Yep this is the fix -- the guys told me 3 screws all I had gone to several mechanics and dealers -- none could figure it out. I was so grateful that someone gave me the clue I needed.

if truck has a ceramic ballist resistor near and connected to coil this could be problem or the crk posistion sensor could be too, i would change ballast first if you have on your truck appx cost $10

I had the same problem with my '05 Stratus SXT 2.4 DOHC. I've replaced the cam pos sensor and it seems to be running fine right now. On the Dodge forums a lot of the guys say that you need to replace the crank pos sensor too. I've bought one of those just in case it comes back again. Hope this helps.

How to check a ignition coil pack to see if its good,

the coil does not crank the engine , the starter does that, sorry.
(if you ever had to hand or foot crank and engine , youd under stand that. (like motor cycles or boat engines, or per 30s cars.)

in fact will crank all day with no spark parts on car..

x2, the scan tool does tell you why there is NO STARTS, CRANKS OK. The pcm can detect, one missfire in 10 cmp;ckp signals.

U checked everything but spark,
why, check spark at all cylinders, all most fire or the engine will not run or stall.
That test be first, if not starting (AFTER SCAN TEST)

lets do no start fails tests. (cranks perfectly 200 to 300 rpm)
  1. : check fuses
  2. key on, CEL lamp must glow, if not , ECU fuse blown.
  3. crank with scan tool , see P03xx DTC errors, see RPM dead.?
  4. check for spark? got spark x4 or times number of cylinders?
  5. got spark try test fuel now, runs for 3 seconds?
  6. yes, runs on test fuel now means lost fueling
  7. no, dont run on test fuel, means, 1 to 5 done wrong above or engine compression bad.
  8. bad fueling, huge number of tests. check fuel pressure now.
confused, try a shop and watch them, learn.

I have a 1994 wrangler 2.5 liter m.t...I just had the motor rebuilt and runs great. A week later it starting to quite suddenly. I would waite 20 minutes and it would retart. When it quits it has no spark,...

a fuel pressure gauge is $20
if pressures ok at fail, then it s NOT PRESSURE problem
(physics here)
you could by a scan tool (obd1) and see what happens at stalls.

one way to find stalls for sure pre 1996 is to measure voltages
on the ASD relay (the stall relay, LOL)
it if drops just before the stall that means the stall was
and if the ECU commanded it , it knows why and will tell you why.
if the stall is not due to ASD drop
then its may other causes.
when you said it had no spark, i bet $10 you did it wrong,?
takes 2 persons, one at key other testing
if not you can NOT run from key to spark plugs, in 2 seconds
the ASD drop out rules.
yah cant
rule 1: key on and see the ASD close, (voltages)
it must close for 2 seconds cranked, must
and just stay closed, cranked, or if in 2 seconds it drops out
'that means the ECU dropped ASD for CAUSES, 1 to 8 reasons

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee intermitantly stalls in the Rain

3 problems and no engine stated.
oldest story ever on gas engines.
1: for the transmission question, check levels and scan it yet?
2; in the rain. questions, ever get tuneup this decade
no engine stated.
if the crank sensor, has 1 bolt do not play with it ask how to do it and not wreck the new one. ok? as seen on 4.0L engines.
fuel gauge can be bad fuel gauge sender.
stalls 101: (1 top cause of 50)
if you scan it ,at the stalls it will tell you why it stalled. most times.
ever try new spark plugs.>?(and filters)

4.0L or 4.7L engine? gas. which one.
4.0 has a spark coil RAIL, making owners fear spark plug changes.
(bad to the bone that) and the coil pack can be just dirty
and when it rains it conducts HV electrons and shorts. until dryer.
same here but different.
the 4.7L has 8 coil packs, COPS, any can fail, boots fail
and sure bad spark plugs, no spark plug made last the life of an engine, so is called a TUNEUP part.

if 4Liter engine the inline 6

this red spacer must be used on all news CKP sensors
or the next startup wrecks the new sensor
seen on this forum 1000s times, and now car as dead spark
sad to watch.
the paper and glue spacer is 0.030" think, 30 thou !
(took lost of work to learn how think, got it from maker)
most schlock stores sell it lacking this key #6 part.... adding to the pain.

My 2001 pt cruiser will run ten minutes stall and wont start back no fire at all but will start back up normal after a couple hours and then run ten mins and stall out have replaced coil pack cam/crank...

A mechanic would check the ASD relay and the coil for voltage when the engine will not start.
You might also want to check the computer for trouble codes.

sounds as if you have two problems the first is mechanical problem in the engine witch is causing the noise you are herring and engine to stall but if you did not here this till after you changed the crank sensor you may be lucky as that may be causing both the stall from before witch happens when they heat up and when you installed the new one if it is not set far enough away from the crank it may have hit it and that is the noise you heard and why it will not start back up pull sensor and see if end has damage.

My jeep has issues with shutting off at random times. It can happen when I am driving or idling. If I am going fast, I will lose my acceleration and I will have to pull over. The engine will either pick up...

The issue lies with any of the following three things 1) can sensor 2) crank sensor and 3) ignition coil. Check the quality of the spark at the plugs as a way to check on the coil output. Next some Jeeps have one coil per two plugs and some have coil on plug. If you have one coil per two plugs disconnect the two plug leads to one of the coils (on four cylinder engine they are arranged plugs 1 + 4 on one coil and plugs 2 + 3 on the other coil). Turn the engine over and sparks should jump between the terminals on the coil. If this happens the crank sensor continuity is OK and that it is detecting crank position, if not then this a strong indication that something is wrong with it. Check it for cracks and check the wiring all the way back to the ECU and check the connection is clean. Replace it if suspect. Now physically check the cam sensor. Any cracks or distortion in the body of the device replace it. Check connections and wiring back to the ECU. Generally the cam sensor goes wrong when the engine is hot. If you get random shut down even when starting up this indicates that it is more likely to be the crank sensor or coil.

Runs fine for approx 15 mins,then stalls out and wont start again

sounds like coil problem, coils will start cold then get hot and stop. when coil cools will crank up and run till it gets hot, try to replace the ignition coil,dont think it would be a crank sensor, try a coil,thanks robert b.

Engine stalls after starying

I HAD THE same problem.... 87,000 2000 grand cherokee 4.7l
when i let off the gas it might stall. happens 1 to 4 times a day.
so far i have
replaced the crank shaft sensor - it stopped stalling for 3 days $130
cleaned the throttle boddy free
replaced the throttle position sensor $72
replaced the idle air control sensor $132
replaced the map manafold airflow sensor $125
no luck it is still stalling. by the way i have done all the work myself. it was about 30 minutes for most parts
i just ordered a rebuilt ecu or pcu engine control unit. they program in the vin, mileage and part nbr so you gc will recognize it. $185
installed ECU 2 days ago...... so far so good.
