Question about Chevrolet Cars & Trucks
I have a 1996 chevy blazer, serpentine belt broke, but car would still start and run just could not turn steering wheel, bought a new belt had to back the truck up to get under the hood, and it ran, after replacing the belt tried to start my truck and it sounded like the battery was dead but it wasn't. now my truck engine won't turn over
A serpentine belt almost never breaks unless one thing happens---one of the accessories seizes and won't turn.Remove the belt and see which pulley won't turn. The serpentine belt is strong enough to keep the engine from cranking up(better grip on the pulleys compared to the old V-belts).I actually remember a tech 3 stalls down from me sell a customer an engine, only to find the alternator was just seized.(embarassing!)Any one accessory bearing will keep it from cranking up,and I'm sure you'll find it quickly after removing the belt.

remove the belt to ac compressor.take your serpentine belt go around crank pulley goes around power steering pump goes around alternator and the tensioner on the far left. the water pump on the out side and the top idler pulley out side. the belt drives them from the out side. then you put your ac compressor belt back on.

After checking around, I decided to replace the harmonic balancer. I had a repair shop fix it for me and I think they over charged for the part. But, at least I'm on the road again. This Grand Am has 227,000 miles and still runs pretty good.
