SOURCE: i have a 1998 jeep grand cherokee it would only go

sounds like the transmission is in a 'limp home" mode to protect the the transmission. if you have access to a scan tool you may be able to bring up a trouble code to lead you to the exact cause of the problem. changing the filter and fluid may help with this and given the age of the vehicle it couldnt hurt either. if the problem persists after the fluid/filter i would cunsult a repair facility.

1998 jeep grand cherokee 4x4. have the p0740 code. have to start from neutral, then shifts faily well. May start fluttering and making noise, have to put back to N, then to D and once again will shift. ...

P0740 JEEP - Torque Converter Clutch Circuit
Symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Transmission shift shock
- Vehicle may not shift into the highest gear

Possible causes
- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Faulty torque converter clutch solenoid valve
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve harness or connectors
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve circuit is open or shorted

When is the code detected?
Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) unlocked for 10 sec., ECM commands converter lock-up and did not record engine speed drop.

P0740 JEEP Description
The torque converter clutch solenoid valve is activated, with the gear in D4, by the Transmission Control Module (TCM) in response to signals sent from the vehicle speed and the Engine Control Module (ECM). Lock-up piston operation will then be controlled. When the torque converter clutch solenoid valve is activated, the torque converter lockup clutch will engage creating a 1 to 1 RPM ratio between the transmission input shaft and the rotational speed of the torque converter.

Lock-up operation, however, is prohibited when A/T fluid temperature is too low.

When the accelerator pedal is depressed (less than 2/8) in lock-up condition, the engine speed should not change abruptly. If there is a big jump in engine speed, there is no lock-up.

Loud Noise,Transfer Case? CV Joint? PLEASE HELP!!!

you think small words (short) finds and fixes complex machines
that be impossible but in your case, the first post ever
where the NV247 J transfer case actually state
New Venture make

first off no statement of where YOUR TIRES are sitting on.
dirt, show, ice, pavement , on road, off road. what????
we cant guess that. only that it makes noise. and all do driving wrong,
4 All time-N-4 low.
are you using 4-low, then stop doing that ON ROAD.

the box runs a very special fluid for the
"Gerator pump, which uses special transfer case lube
"
do not play with this fluid or use GL4 or GL5 or mix in other wrong fluids, or omg adding additives of any kind like dang LOOCUSS bs.

your video is dead.

tell when it make noise
in ALL Time mode? only
all speeds
all gears in main trans
accelerating only
decel?
turns? only
like that, or why not get a real 4wd shop to find it.
as we are blind here and cant hear, or drive it .

1995 JEEP WRANGLER Automatic 4 cyl. gears starting to slip

ck the condition of the tranny fluid. If the fluid is very dark, it will need changing. Another problem with the jeep auto tranny is that if the fluid has not been changed in a long time, the clutch material will wear and clog the tranny filter inside the pan.If there is alot of clutch material in the pan and you change the fluid and filter, sometimes the tranny won't work because the clutches are worn out too much.

2000 GRAND CHEEROKE LIMITED- GEAR NOISE LIKE A RING & PINION CHANGES WITH EXCEL, COAST OR DECEL VERY DEFINITLY ON FRONT DRIVE TRAIN UNIT HAS QUADATRACK

If your front gearset is noisy, check fluid level, then check lube by removing cover and draining...If you find fine metal flakes in the lube you have damage inside (either gear or bearing wear) If there is a substantial amount of metal you will need to do something about it (rebuild or replace) If minimal metal if found, replace cover and re-fill with lube. If noise persists then rebuild or replace again applies.
Rebuilds are expensive and an exacting science beyond the ability of most owners and even many techs. Cheaper is to replace unit completely using a scrapyard part...you absolutely need to match gear ratio or you will cause damage to the transfer case.
I hope your problem turns out to be just a low lube condition and that you don't need to go further.

94 jeep grand cherokee laredo V8 5.2l automatic. Drives fine but after 10-15 mins of driving After its parked it makes loud popping noise from the rear. Cant locate where the sound is exactly coming from....

You can check fluid level by removing the rubber plug in the cover. Fluid is full when on level ground, it is just at the edge of the hole (or very close) if you are already getting noises out of there, you can remove the cover and inspect gears for wear or breakage. If you find a large amount of metal debris in the lube it tells you something bad is going on back there. Although rebuildable, it's not a home job...requires exact settings in order to operate properly. You can find good units far cheaper than even a gearset costs in any scrapyard. to match ratio, count the teeth on the ring gear and the pinion gear. the replacement MUST have the exact same number. Before swapping diffs, check all back there to make sure noise is not from somewhere else.

95 Jeep wrangler wont go in gear

if this is something that started suddenly, it could be a leak in your master cylinder or slave cylinder, or your fluid could be low, or there could be air in the lines. Make sure it's full of fluid, and get back to me.

98 Jeep Grand Cherokee Stuck in 1st gear!

I would drop the trans pan and change fluid & filter. If you find an extreme amount of debris in pan, filter may have become partially plugged, which can lower internal pressure. Only problem is that if there is enough debris to plug up filter, it indicates wear inside unit, which a fluid change will not correct (no chemical will) But, if problem becomes somewhat better after oil change, an additive such as Lucas conditioner may prolong useful life somewhat.Otherwise, have unit rebuilt.
good luck

4x4 slips shiftin gears starting and stopping

you might already know but when shifting into 4wd you can shift into 4hi while driving as long as the tires,(all four) are travelling the same speed. you can't shift into 4wd if you are spinning. 4 low you have to completely stop. When you are in 4 low as you know the power of vehicle is greatly increased due to gear reduction. so if you are seeing slipping symptoms, you might want to change transmission filter. It might not be much help to you but it might prevent problems down the road. also when changing fluid be sure to put mopar transmission fluid for replacement on jeep. like gm calls for dexron. the transfer case on dodge and jeeps also takes transmission fluid. I had to replace a t-case on my friends dakota that was making a grinding noise and it turns out a seal had leaked some fluid out and burnt up some bearings. pretty expensive. they are chain driven. hope I didnt get too carried away, because I am not a transmission expert but I just wanted to share what I did know with you.

Loud roar or vibration

Start by inspecting your tires. Look for uneven tread ware, tire separation (a bubble) on the inside or outside. Then change the fluid in your front and rear differential. This will tell you if you have a gear problem. Change the fluid in your transfer case also for indication of a gear problem.
