Question about 1997 Dodge Avenger

Manual transmission on 1997

I just bought a 1997 Dodge Avenger about a month ago. It is a stick. Now the car won't go into 1st gear and it struggles into reverse. Could this be low fluid? If so, how do you check it? Can't find a dip stick for it.

no, haven't not been under the car started as I drove it to work. Anything particular I should be looking for under the car?

It could be that you need a new clutch or throughout barring. ? Have you been under the car to see if there is any thing out of the ordinary?

If there is no dipstick, then there will be a plug on the side of the transmission that you remove and put your finger in to feel the lever of fluid. (I hate this style personally, if ur trani is too full of fluid it drains out through this level checking hole) if its too low ... you don't know how low so add until fluid just begins to drip out, or if you can see into the hole, fill until fluid gets to the rim.

Can you shift into 2nd? 3rd? etc. if you can shift into those easily then fluid is probably not the cause.

It could be a worn clutch, worn out shift forks, damaged teeth on gears. there are several more, if this does not solve it let me know and give as many details as you can to help diagnosis.

1997 dodge avenger won;t start. engine has no spark. checked the spark plugs, they look good.

Does your engine turn over, just not fire? if it sounds like it wants too start but its not firing, try your distributor. this happened to my car last week actually, went out and bought a new dist. and it is fine now. its a big expense, so try to find one at a junk yard and they say you can take it back if its not that. thats your best bet. hope it helps.

HI, when the transmission heats up the solenoids stick and sets the transmission in fail safe mode common issue with Chrysler transmission. I would recommn\end your local transmission shop.

Did you put the correct fluid back in the transmission? If it is too heavy weight oil it will cause the synronizers to stick.
