I'm going to bet the a/c compressor locked up which put extra load on the tensioner which melted the pulley which snapped the belt. With the engine off the center part of the pulley should turn by hand as well as the part with the ribs that the belt rides in. If either one of those, I suspect the center part, is not turning than the compressor needs to be replaced.

Water pump locked, belt broke when car parked (melted on hot wp pulley. now tensioner is locked = can move to take tension off to install new belt. Why would it lock-up?


for a water pump to lock ( seize) it would have had bearing failure in the pump. that will require a new water pump. It is possible of obstruction in the impellor section but this would be unlikely. When water pump bearins fail you will normally hear a low tinny metal growl at low rpm long before seizure occurs

yes, if it is frozen up the belt will squeal and burn up ! you can go to any auto parts store and tell them you need a idler pulley for your vehicle. good-day !

if you smel lburning rubber one of the pulleys has siezed so try to spin all of the pulleys to see which one it is and then replace it

Make sure all of the pulleys that the belt travels around turn freely. Often times its the drive belt tensioner that has seized, causing the belt to melt and brake.

GoeffreyH is not correct. On this engine the water pump is run by a small, single, separate belt which cannot be adjusted by the alternator because it (and the water pump itself) are on the opposite end of the engine from the crank pulley and other accessories, such as alternator, A/C, etc. which are driven by the main serpentine belt. The water pump is driven by a pulley on the end of one camshaft. Your confusion stems from the change from the old system, in which a longer belt was used with a tensioner in the traditional fashion, and the new system on 2004 vans where the tensioner was eliminated and a 'stretch fit' belt was used. Stretch fit belts have a springy component (like a rubber band) and keep their own tension this way by being stretched a bit to fit over the pulleys then holding snug against them. The problem is that some parts books erroneously call for the old belt for vans which need the new one. So the first belt your mechanic got was longer (to fit over the extra tensioner pulley) and static (not stretchy). On these newer vans, you can still see the mounting boss where the tensioner would have gone, it's part of the castings so it's still there. That's why it looks like there's a place for a tensioner but like none was ever there. Both your observations are correct. The only thing you need to do now is make sure your new belt is the right one, that it's a stretch fit belt, so it maintains tension (otherwise the water pump pulley will eventually start to slip and spin too slowly and the van will overheat) and also that it's not TOO tight, which will put you out of another water pump. The correct belt, if it's from NAPA, would be 030250SF.

When the AC compressor kicks on, an electrical load is placed on the alternator and the drive belt that turns the alternator pulley, if not tight enough, can cause the belt to squeal. Replacing the belt should help with that noise if the belt is stretched from wear. The screeching noise can be from a bad idler pulley, a bad belt tensioner pulley or a bad alternator pulley or a failing clutch on a very old ac compressor and rarely a water pump pulley. To check pulleys remove the drive belt and turn them individually to see if they can be tilted up down or sideways with play in the "bearing" of the pulley. Also, you may wish to visually inspect the clutch on the ac and look for melted black rubber around the bolts that secure the clutch to the compressor (stinks,smokes and melts these rubber areas if ac compressor clutch fails).

The belt is melting. there is nothing sezed up everything moves freely the belt is not to tight whats wrong with it


Well it cant be too tight, but is the tensioner working freely? Tensioner pulley ok? A/c compressor works OK?
