Have you checked your transmission fluid level. After you've driven for at least 10 minutes park the car in a level spot. Put your transmission into neutralm not park. Open the hood and use the transmission dip stick (looks just like your oil one but says trans fluid on it) Remove the dip stick wipe it clean (the fluid should be pink and not smell burnt) put it back in and pull it out, make sure your fluid is in the 'safe' range. If fluid is dark or smells bad have it changed. Unfortunately if you've never had it changed it may have already caused damage.

Is overdrive activated when the light at the end of the gear shift is on or off on a Lincoln navigator 2001

If the "Overdrive Off" indicator is illuminated, this will prevent the torque converter from locking and engaging overdrive. This can be useful when traveling through hilly regions or when heavily loaded to keep the transmission from continuously hunting for the correct gear. When the light is off, the transmission will operate normally, including locking the torque converter and engaging OD. You should normally drive with the light off. If the light is flashing, that's an indication of a transmission diagnostic trouble code being present.

My overdrive light is flashing on and off on my 2000 ford Windstar van could a blown fuse be causing it

First of all have an auto parts store check for trouble codes...The flashing overdrive light is a warning that the overdrive unit is overheating and/or low on fluid...#1 choice is overheating and you will be looking at a costly rebuild if this is not attended too soon...Have your radiator, which also has a transmission cooler flushed, cleaned and refilled immediately...Have someone check if fluid is leaking then cleaned and filled with fresh fluid...saailer

1996 windstar overdrive light flashes sometimes

In this model Ford a flashing OD light indicates that a fault has been detected in the operation of the electronically controlled trans axle. What must be done now is to have the Powertrain Control Module scanned with a special tool for the fault code that is set when this light was commanded to flash by the systems control module and make appropriate repairs based on those findings.

My transmission seems to hesitate at 30-40mph then it smoothes out have changed the fluid and this is still going on could you please give me some kind of clue what this could be ?

Does this happen with the overdrive off or on? If it happens with the overdrive on, then suggest you try it without the overdrive and see if your indications change. The overdrive normally starts to operate in that range. While both are transmission problems the overdrive isn't as hard to repair.

Engine lite stays on, before that the overdrive lite was flashing

Your vehicle’s computer system has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with one of the components or sensors it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and you need to diagnosed and repaired it. The list of possible codes number in the hundreds. The code itself doesn't tell exactly what component is defective - it only indicates where to look, or what engine parameter is out of normal range. You or a technician will have to perform further testing to pinpoint cause and the proper repair.

If your overdrive light is flashing and the transmission is not shifting properly, you most likely have diagnostic codes stored in the tranmission control module. These codes relate to a specific sensor/solenoid/actuator and can help in diagnosing your problem. You will need a scan tool to read these codes. You should also check your transmission fluid level to see if it is at recommended level (engine at normal operating temp). The fluid should be red in color, if it is very dark or brown/black in color and has a burnt smell to it, your transmission has internal damage and will need to overhauled.
A qualified transmission shop (Aamco, Lee Miles, Gibralter, etc.) would be your best bet.

Hope this helps.
