Sounds like it's time for a new battery. When it gets gold your battery gets a little weaker and doesn't have enough power to crank the engine (even if there is enough power to work the accessories/lights.

Starter problems

It's diesel. Diesel engines do not like cold, but that is normal. I am going to assume this engine has a start delay in cold weather to allow for Glow Plugs to warm up the cylinders before actually turning over the engine. I don't know about TDI's specifically, but I think a TDI Mech at your local Volkswagen dealer could confirm my assumption. They may call the parts something different, but the function will be the same. Sounds like normal operation for a diesel engine in cold weather...obviously, this would be why the engine always turns over immediately in warm need for the Glow Plugs to warm the cylinders. Best of luck resolving this problem.

My 1999 vw beetle won't start in snow

Old new beetle VW harness has contact resistance problems(vibration of wires) and needs to be recrimped the long wires(vibration can be stopped by silicone rubber anchoring). Cold weather make battery voltages low and needs recharged with handbrake on(headlamps off) 10 minutes warming engine up the whole winter.

99 volkswagon beetle check engine llight is on. the scanner tool said cold start sensor?? what could that mean? approx. how much at the most will it cost? PLEASE HELP

This is the sensor that control cold start up idle just like a choke use to do on the old carborated systems. It allows for the car to idle slightly higher and tells the ccu to adjust the air to fuel ratio for cold starting. Since it is a volkswagen it could be rather expensive.

My 1999 volkswagen bug when cold runs really slow once warm it runs great. what is the problem

check the owners manual to make sure youre using the right oil. cars do lose compression when theyre cold, thats why it is so important to warm up the car before driving in cold weather.
