Battery checked and holds its charge when earth lead and live lead connected the battery will go flat overnight

Something is being left on to drain a battery that quickly, or the system has a dead short in it somewhere. The only drain should come from the alarm system and chronometer in the radio to keep the time correct. That will only drain a battery in about 6 months of not being charged from engine running. I've found the easiest way to check if anything else is still draining power is at the fuse box. With switch off, test each fuse to see if there is still power on them. Then pull the fuse that is still powered and see what isn't working now and the grounded system will show itself. Just leave that fuse out overnight and see does the battery drain down. if not, go thru that system and find the short or faulty unit it's connected to. I always go directly to the grounds to fix problems if something isn't working, yet with your situation, the ground is causing the problem the other way. Something is still connected that shouldn't be.

I have a 1983 chevy g20 van and something keeps draining my battery. I have to keep getting jumped off. I was told i have a short somewhere and thats what draining it. I cant find a short. But i did find...

Usually the Dome lights, CPU, theft prevention, cigarette lighter are all on the battery direct.
Could be a short on any of them.
A very weak battery could drain quicker than normal.
Hope this helps.

99 jeep grand Cherokee limited. Have checked everything. Battery drains with in a few hours. Had battery checked. It's good. Nothing left on. What else do I need to check

Have your alternator checked. If you have lost a diode inside of the alternator, it can still charge, but will be a direct short to ground and zap the battery in no time.

Battery is drained every morning

Drains are a direct short, either within the battery whereby the cells fail to maintain continuity, or there is a connection short outside of the battery, Check the ground connection and look also for corrosion at the terminals. Trace the wires for any possible insulation damage. Even a small pin hole can short a line, so test with your meters and observation.

Battery drajn

I can't come and diagnose your car, but there are 2 things that might help.
First, if you will disconnect your battery each time you are finished driving your car, the battery will not drain overnight. You will need to re-connect it to go somewhere.
Second, there is an electrical item that is turned on, that is not turning off, or, there is a short in your electrical system.
When, in the morning or whatever, you hook up your battery, if there is a spark of any size at all between the battery cable and the battery connection, you know there is a short or something left on.

Brand new Motorola Battery installed by Ford Dealership not holding charge, cables tight, all looks normal?

Remove the negative terminal. With the key off place a test light between the cable end & the terminal. If the test light lights up, there's a direct short in your electrical system. The clock & other constant hot components do not carry enough current to light the test light. Be sure the doors are closed & all things are manually turned off that can be turned off. If test light does not light up there are no direct shorts, check the charging system, alternator & voltage regulator. Auto Zone can check the charging system for free.

1998 Corvette drains the battery in less than 2 days.

No, corrosion will not cause a battery to drain, even if the corrosion is on the terminals. Several factors can cause battery drain, I would first have the battery tested to see if the battery it self is not bad. If the battery is good, then the most common is a short. All most all new cars have a certain amount of drain,(measured in milivolts) this drain is for clocks and computer memory's, and it would take several days of a vehicle sitting for the battery to be drained. Don't immediately assume you have a problem if you see 2-6 milivolts of drain on a battery with the key out, now if your battery is being drained after being parked over night, you have a problem. The easiest way to pin down the problem short is to disconnect your positive battery cable from the battery, take a 12 volt test light and clamp one end to the positive cable, and hold the probe to the positive post. Now if you have a short the light will come on. Have someone help you by pulling the fuses one at a time. If when a fuse is pulled the light goes out you have isolated the short to that system. If you pulled all the fuses and the light never went out try disconnecting all the wires from the alternator, 9 times outta 10 do this will let you know where your short is. If the system is not critical like power locks some people just leave the fuse out.
