Question about Dodge Cars & Trucks
On my 1999 dodge 3.9 litre dakota hy revs and takes long to shift if it shifts at all just had intake manifold gasket on bottom side replaced
Sounds like the kick down cable is stretched or out o adjustment. it operates a valve on the driver side of the tranny. when the cable brakes or streches it wont open the valve far enough to allow tranny fluid to pass. i would inspeck the cable at the intake to make sure it was properly conected and down at the tranny. replacement would also correct your down shifting issue.

You most likely have a broken wire in the steering column that goes to the manual shift mode switch. And as far as the exhaust leak goes, you need a new manifold. They crack and leak. Common problem.

SOURCE: GrandAm Tranmission shifts hard
I had the same problem in my 2002 grand am GT. After taking it to a transmission shop and them telling me that I had all this stuff wrong with it that was going to cost me about 2700$ I looked elsewhere. I had an Intake Temperature Sensor that had went bad. It was registering on the check engine light after the fact. I changed it and then found out there was a loose wire in the connector. I fixed that and havent had a problem with it since

it could but- check passenger side front where heater core line go into manifold right behind alternator the hose line is connected by a press clip into an alloy fitting this fitting gets eaten away by anti freeze and hose angle pulls back on fitting the part is $18 at dealer and is screwed into manifold use caution if ur r going to replace at very edge of aluminum manifold---and check ur water pump bolts the 2 longer ones should have a lock sealant on them they bolt in thru a water jacket
