Question about 2002 Ford Escape

Rear differential / axle noise and vibration.

2002 Ford Escape, AWD. Vibration under acceleration between 20kph-40kph. Recent leak on rear axle shaft seal. Oil levels have been very low or possibly non existent. Problem with vibration becomes worse with AWD switched on. Also, when AWD on -- turning sharply on dry pavement causes the inside wheel to not slip. I believe that the differential is completely locked up when in AWD. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Have tried the same sharp turn (AWD on) on gravel with the same results. It appears as though the rear differential is totally locked. Even when travelling in a straight line, there is a vibration in the rear end when AWD is engaged.



    F.Y.I. -- since having this issue I have topped up the differential with gear oil. I have not added any friction modifier.

A drive shaft that has lost a balancing weight will vibrate between 40 and 50 mph. If not corrected this could damage the input shaft bearing and seal on the differential causing oil leakage. Differentials are fairly indestructible but if run without oil will fail.
As for the front end you should never run the 4wd on dry pavement. The front differential is a posi traction unit that will turn both wheels at the same rate unlike the rear diff that will allow the inner wheel to turn slower than the outer on turns.

At this point, I would take the cover off of the differential and look inside. You may be able to do it yourself or have someone else look at it. If there is a problem, you should be able to see it. Look for metal shavings and burned parts.

Do not wait, as this problem can go from a small problem to a big one fairly quickly if it isn't already too late.

Differentials don't last long without lubrication.

Check for a worn universal joint on the drive shaft going to the rear wheels.

Check your transmission fluid level. (Low level can cause vibration on acceleration.)

Check to see if your transmission filter needs changing.

Does it only vibrate under heavy acceleration?

Vibration in rear end


There are several other things which can make a noise. The people you showed the car have the advantage of hearing or feeling the noise that we do not have a chance to do.

A catalytic noise can change with the engine RPM. You can rev up the engine in Park or Neutral and should be able to replicate the noise. If not, then you have a moving part making the noise.

Sometimes the Emergency brake material comes loose from the metal backing and jams inside the rear drum/rotors. It will cause vibration when pulling away from a stop, and eventually will grind into powder.

Rear axle differential clutches. There are friction disks inside some types of rear-ends. A special lube additive makes these work. Sometimes a refill of additive and lube can make marginally performing units more quiet.

U-joints can make noise and vibrate. Its another moving part noise.

The fan clutch can also make noise and vibration. The A/C compressor and compressor clutch bearing can make noise. The A/C clutch operates intermittently depending on pressure and temperature.temperature.

Bad vibration in reverse


This could be anywhere in the drive-line. Process of elimination would be the best approach. From your symptoms it sounds like the bad vibration is noticed at low speeds. There are many moving parts within this system. Were there and recent repairs performed? New tires could cause a vibration, if the tread is aggressive. Damaged wheel-bearings, defective components inside the rear differential (suspect low fluid level, damaged ring and pinion or bearings), defective U-joints, or internal transmission failure. You didn't mention if the truck was 2wd or 4wd. If the vehicle is a 4X4 then you will need to inspect the transfer case, the U-joints in the output shaft, and the front wheel bearings. I'm not sure how far you want to go with the diagnostics. Please write back if you have other questions or to give an update to how the repair is going, good luck.

There's a weird humming coming from the rear of the vehicle when driving, what could be the problem?


Does it occur when you are coasting? under acceleration? cruising? Are the rear tires the same overall height?

If it occurs under acceleration and in within a narrow band of engine speed while accelerating, that vibration is actually a driveline harmonic. In the 1990's Ford hung a 5 pound weight off the end of the transmission to damp that vibration. If you had transmission service and it removed- put it back.

Other issues/ solutions or partial solutions can be spring sag- the pinion angle is rather critical on these. Are there any shims under the spring perches? Any missing? Ford's ultimate solution was to go to really soft spring rates. Any broken leaves in the leaf springs?

If the noise happens when coasting, it could be ring and pinion noise. If not audible under load of acceleration, it is nothing to worry excessively about. Just check to make sure the differential has lube to the level it needs to be and no leaks.

If it occurs while cruising, it could be indications of tail shaft bushing or slip yoke wear. It can also be an indication of U joint wear as well, or a weight on the driveshaft for balancing fell off. This latter can be adressed with 2 large hose clamps, but it is tedious trial and error

My 2002 Ford Explorer 4WD has a significant humming noise/light vibration while driving and sounds like the rear differential bearings/gears. How can I tell/pinpoint the problem?


Usually, the rear pinion bearing will make a higher pitched whining noise under a slight load. As soon as the throttle pedal is released, the noise stops. The rear axle shaft bearings will make a lower growling rumble when they are bad.

Another thing to check are the Emergency brakeshoes inside the hub of the rear rotors. The shoe material frequently separates from the rusty shoe plates and the bonded material gets pulverized. This would be similar to a "rocks crushing" sound and can cause vibration in the drivetrain.

The U-joints can cause this problem too. Check for rust and oil streaks which appear shortly before the U-joints fall apart. You should find telltale streaks on the undercarriage of your vehicle.
The front driveshaft can cause noise without being powered. There is just enough sympathetic rotation when the 4 wheel drive is Off, to cause sounds and vibration.

Testing can be aided by using a Commercial hoist and having the drivetrain engaged with the engine running. You would observe the shaking or use a probe "long broom handle" to the stationary parts like the axle tubes, differential housing, pinion bearing area, and so on. This would require a helper to sit in the hoisted vehicle and a second person to stand under a running machine. Not for the faint of heart. No baggy or loose fitting clothes, no long hair, etc.

Now there is a specialized machine which can Electronically investigate noise and vibration. There are sensors which are placed under the vehicle and it listens to vibrations. I saw one machine one time. It helps in balancing driveshafts too. A driveshaft balancing shop may be able to fix you up.

I hope my solutions are very helpful to you. If you do not have the exotic testing equipment you may have to drop the driveshafts to check your U-joints.

the reason you could do that was because it does not have positraction in the differential and it is designed that way for when you take turns so each axle can spin at a different speed. and the ginding noise with the brakes can be misinstalled hardware or a warped rotor.

Vibration/Rattling on right side during high speeds


I had a similar problem. The dealer change automatic transmission and differential, but the noise continu. After research on internet i think the problem is the front galiper who create a vibration on the disc wheel and the vibration frequence follow the front axle until interior car. Just press slowly the brake pedal and if the noise stop , that's it the cause i think. I dont change my galiper, but i have a new transmission . :)))

Noise and vibration above 50 mph


Sounds like front differential or front drive axle issues. Check the front differential gear oil then take er' to the dealership before you end up spending a bunch of $. Most people change their oil frequently in the engine but forget about flushing the transmission fluid and changing oil in the front and rear differentials. I have three Ford 4X4s. Two which really get used hard. The 93 has 311K miles and still runs excellent. Trans and differentials get a fluid change every 25K miles and moble one synthetic engine oil changes every 5k miles.

2002 ford Ranger 3.0 v6 (auto) rear end noise when accelerating on curves.


Remove the drums and check your rear brakes. If okay, you may try testing a couple different tires in the rear. Belts separating and flat spots show worse at higher speeds.
It could be bearings if truck is used alot while loaded. Remember 1/4 ton is only 500lbs. High miles, hard driving, or if it was wrecked in rear could all cause these smptoms.
