My 1997 ford f350 intermittently won't shift into overdrive and the button on the end of the shifter does nothing, will not turn on or off. what could be the problem?

switch behind the brake pedal?? This send the signal for your brake lights and also activates the interlock to shift out of park.

Since you have the same 4R100 as the 7.3L I recommend checking the resistance of the solenoid connectors, it is like sonic said at the rear passenger side and it will be hiding under some flexible heat shielding (it is next to the exhaust pipe afterall..). Specifically, take the resistance (ohms) from pins 1 to 4 doesn't matter which is black or red. It should be 10-20 ohms. You also might have to put a jack under the transfer case, unbolt, drop the support beam and let the whole drivetrain come down a bit for decent access. These pins should be labeled but pin 1 is in the row away from the tab and is the rear-most pin. Replacing the solenoid body is $200 and a pan drop. Grab a few gallons of Mercon!

There is another recall on the cruise control. The first added a fuse. This new recall is about wiring and lighting problems caused by the cruise. Everything from not shifting out of Park to no brake lights to false dash indicators. Best to contact the dealer, if it is a recall its free.

what ever you do,do not take it to aamco they are scam artist,they will tear the trans. apart and then they will tell you it is 2000.00 or more to fix it.and they can finance it depending on your credit and then if you cant pay they keep it charge you storage fees and then the car belongs to them unless you can come up with ththe over priced money they want to charge you to do" something" who knows what dont get taken cause that is what will happen and of course they give you a warranty hell you wikll way over pay.

Is there a way to permanently disable the overdrive on my 1994 Ford f150


You should have an overdrive off button at the end of your gear shift lever. just switch it off and tape over the button. Or the wires from the button connect at the bottom of the shifter. The button is on or off, figure out which disengages the overdrive and either leave the circuit open or closed.

My gear shifter is loose and and will move from r to d but does not shift truck out of reverse. The shifter hangs loose. Is there a pin broke or is the shifting cable broke?

My 1994 Ford Ranger SuperCab won't shift into the overdrive. All the other gears in the tranny shift smooth and work well. It just won't shift into the overdrive. Every once in a while the check engine...


There is an overdrive bypass switch on the end of the shift lever on some, Push the button on the end of the shifter. It is easy to overlook, as it is on the very end of the shift lever, and can be inadvertently switched off when you shift to park. Hope this solves your problem

2002 f350 powerstroke, keep blowing fuse #45. seems to blow when i shift out of park, or could be when i release the park brake.


The wire from you shifter overdrive button rubbed and will ground but not everytime. The truck will idle but you will have only a idle. Open the top cover and you will see the bad spot, Fix or replace and you are good.

97 ford contour has green blinking light on dashboard bottom right about same speed as turn signal-slao load beeping sound pulsates and wont stop unless i shut off radio-help green light reads either o/o...


All I can tell you is that the green light indicates your overdrive. It usually only lights up when it is turned off. There should be a green button on your shifter right under the button you press in to shift (say, from park to drive).

IT IS LETTING YOU KNOW THAT YOU HAVE A TROUBLE CODE IN THE TCM (TRAN CONTROL MODULE) COMPUTER MOST OF THE TIME IF ITS FLASHING,IT WILL EITHER NOT SHIFT INTO OVERDRIVE,OR SHIFT WEIRD,USUALLY IT WILL GIVE YOU REASON TO CHECK THE TRANS, IT COULD BE A SIMPLE AS THE O/D SWITCH IS BAD, & IT IS TELLING YOU THAT O/D CANNOT BE TURNED OFF.

My f350 blowes fuse gauages and tack when i shift out of park


Sounds to me like there is a wire or some wires that get caught up in the shifter linkage under the dash. Hope this will help out. Best wishes.
