Question about Toyota Camry

5 Answers

91 Camry. I have a starting problem when hot. My car starts easily when cold and runs excellent. It started acting up a couple of months ago. If I let it sit for 20 mins and try to start it will turn over and over and over but not catch. The last time this happened and it did start it backfired and ran really rough for about 10 secs and cleared and ran great. Starts cold no problem. If I turn off and start within 5-10 minutes it will start right back up. Replaced ignition coil yesterday....no luck :0 Thanks Lynn

I think i would try two things, spark plugs and wires- second i would try new distributor cap and rotor

if that doesn't do it, the new Avalons are really nice, (keep your sense of humor-it will get you through)

I really hope this does it for you.
good luck and please leave rating...thank you kindly

There are two things it could be, both are fuel related. One, and most likely, is what is call vapor lock. This is when the fuel in the fuel line is warmed to the point of vaporizing. This happens when a fuel line is in close proximity to a hot engine part such as the exhaust manifold. On older autos sometimes the heat shelds on the exhaust manifolds will rust off being made of only sheet metal. This could expose the fuel line to the needed heat to cause vapor lock. When the fuel cools in the line it returns to a liqued and the car will start. Check to see if a heat sheld has come off or the fuel line is running too close to a heat sorce. If need be gently move it away of protect it from the heat.
The second thing is the check valve. This is a unit that will not allow the fuel to drain back down the fuel line to the tank. It's possable that it is dirty or warn. Normally they are found on the engine side of the fuel pump and in some cases incorperated in the pump itself. This is a long shot. Good luck

I read your posting again and you stated that if you try to start within 5-10 minutes it will start. Also the fact that it will backfire and run rough indicates a fuel starvation situation so its possible that you have a bad check valve. The fuel will not drain away in the 5-10 minute time but if left longer will. Also you will need to crank the engine longer to get the fuel up to the engine.

Check your fuel pressure. Make sure it is within specification, sounds like you have a bad regulator.

With that many miles, I would expect to find the injector as the issue. But it could also be a sticking valve. Or a valve that has problems opening as the oil gets hot. You may want to do a compression test hot and cold too.

Not getting fire or fuel when hot

Try checking your air filter first. Then check your engine ground connection. Change your fuel filter. If it's none of those, it could be a faulty idle control .

91 jimmy starts cold, runs rough hot, dies when put in drive

Try to unplug the mass airflow sensor and start it. It will idle higher but should run fine. If it works then you need a MAF sensor. Be sure you have an OBDII code puller to clear the computer when done

Hard starting when the car is hot

The cars vacuums act different when the car is hot. My does the same. Be patient, bump it over a couple times to let it start. If it doesn't start than apply just a little peddle. You may have a tune up put on it.
