Question about Cars & Trucks

Open Question

Hi, i have a '98 mitsubishi lancer 1300cc engine automatic transmition. There are a couple of things wrong with this car. In cold weather it sounds like it's very close to stalling when idleing untill it gets hot. There is also a sizeable crack in the exhaust manifold. Im about to replace the manifold, but i cant figure out why it idles so badly. Any suggestions?

SOURCE: 2000 SL-1 fast idle problem during cold weather only

You need to check and/or replace the thermostat and/or the temp. sensor. Take a meat thermometer and stick it in the overflow tank. The temp gauge on the dash should register above the 1/4 mark after at least 15 minutes of driving. If so, the meat thermometer should read above 180 degrees. If the meat thermometer reads 180 but the gauge isn't above 1/4, then you need to replace the sensor. If the meat thermometer doesn't read 180 or higher, then you need to replace the thermostat. The thermostat in these cars, though it doesn't fail on its own, has an unnecessary rubber gasket that fails, and allows coolant to leak past even when shut, causing the engine to not warm up thoroughly. IF the engine doesn't warm up, the idle won't come down--speaking from personal experience. I had to replace both items on my car. Now it idles fine, and after a bit of driving the gauge registers between 1/4 and 1/2, but always above 1/4. DO NOT tamper with idle adjustments unless you have exhausted all other possibilities. They are factory set, critical, and almost never need readjusting. Good luck.

SOURCE: Mitsubishi space star (x reg) stalling on idling and on stopping

This problem apears when the battery has been diconected for some time. Start the car, and leave in in idle without driving it for about 10 min. The car runs fine after that.

I Have a Mitsubishi Lancer 06, 1300cc when ac is

Welcome to the club, The AC units in cars use a large amount of power to run. Your is a 1300cc motor which is almost smaller then the AC unit itself, lol. What you have is normal and to fix it would be to get a bigger engine to run the AC. Everything strains a bit when the AC is on, all cars do it and yours being as powerful as a skateboard doesn't help. Your going to have to live with the problem of an under powered vehicle doing it's best to keep you cool. :.)

I have a mitsubishi lancer, automatic gear , 1300 cc in a ht weather like egypt, what is the best engine oil to use mobil 1 5w50, or total 5w40

You did not state the age or better yet the mileage on the car. The Lancer is a very good vehicle and 200,000 miles without even touching the engine is the norm. If you're doing over 150, 000 miles i would recommend the 5w50

What oil type

Go with the shop manual's recommendation - it's put out by the manufacturer. If they list different viscosities for cold vs warm weather, you may benefit by following that if you live in a climate with cold winters (ie, 5W30 in winter, and 10W30 in summer).
