Question about Oldsmobile Alero

I have a 2002 Alero. The thermostat and water pump were replaced and it was still overheating. I replaced both hoses thinking they were weak. Now the issue is that as the temperature gauge rises the heater will blow warm for a minute then the temperature gauge will fall and then it blows cold for a minute...this alternates continuously as i am driving! What could it be?

You have to bleed the air out of the system, there is a small brass valve( maybe 2 valves in the front of the engine compartment ) that must be opened to allow the air to escape. Engine must be running while bleeding the coolant

SOURCE: Overheating and heater not work

there is a valve on the water pump and one on the thermostat housing open those up one at a time until you get a little bit of antifreeze come out then tighten them back up. All you will be doing is bleeding the air out of the cooling system. my car was doing the same thing after I changed my thermostat.

Get a compression check to find out if you have a bad head gasket, I have a 96 with the 3.8L that had the same problems at first. then it started to blow out antifreeze thru the expansion tank, the head gasket finally blew the rest of the way going down the highway

A couple of things to check because as you describe your symptoms you actually have 2 problems

1. No heat from vents.

Sounds like the heater water flow valve cable is kinked disconnected or the valve itself is stuck You will need to follow your heater core water supply lines to find the valve usually to the right of the center console in the ducting area / large plastic housing for heater and AC internal coils. If the valve works then there is a possibility that the heater core water supply lines have been bypassed on the engine side of the firewall with a coupling due to a leaking heater core. And l;astly the heater core could just be clogged. (quite rare!!)

As for the overheating engine after all of the work you have done.. Perform this simple test.

1. remove radiator cap
2. have someone else start the car
3. watch for water coming out of the open radiator cap area DURING start...
4. have person in the car rev engine gently 2 or 3 times. No need to exceed 2000 RPM. If water rapidly flows out of the radiator during engine revs.. you have some major engine issues.
If it passes all of these checks then the only thing left is improper hose connections on the engine side of the firewall and or a hydraulic water lock in the block that should clear itself by starting and stopping the engine many times with the radiator cap off.

There are many things that can cause overheating.

  1. Clogged radiator (internally or clogged fins externally)
  2. Bad water pump
  3. Air in cooling system
  4. Weak coolant
  5. Faulty cooling fan(s)/fan sensor(s)
  6. Bad pressure cap on radiator or reservoir (whichever it uses)

I vaguely recall a bleeder on the intake or close to the top? Trapped air will make it overheat again.

Try removing the thermostat and reverse flushing the motor, Actually try flushing in both directions, this will tell you if you have a circulation problem but 1 thing you should know is that the water goes in the water pump and out the thermostat, try running it without the thermostat and check your water flow

Coolant leaking thermostat problems


Try looking at all the hoses...AND Water Pump...you should be able to see and verify the leak...hoses etc...the Water Pump is not expensive on your Alero...($35.) Yes, change thermostat at time of coolant drain for Water Pump as needed...:) Hope this helps.

My 2002 mazda 626 was overheating. Replaced the radiator (cracked) and coolant tank (leaking). Still overheating. Its the thermostat or the water pump right? Which should I check first? Where how and what...


I would check the thermostat. It should be in the housing that the upper radiator hose connects to. I would take the thermostat and put it in a pan of water on a stove, if the thermostat doesn't start to open before the water begins a rolling boil, the thermostat is probably stuck closed.

2002 Jetta 1.8T blew 40A cooling fan fuse - overheated, destroyed 4 way cooling hose connector - replaced all- now it still runs very hot, inside temp reads 190 (but temp is much higher), cooling fans run...


Then replace the thermostat, because if on lower hose not hot and on upper hose scalding hot = antifreeze flow blocked by the thermostat wich remains closed!!!

there may be air trapped in the coolant system. the fans may not be connected since you had the radiator replaced. bring it back to the mechanic who did the work and tell him your not satisfied.he should be responsible for the discrepany.

If you changed the hoses and thermostat and the car is still overheating, then the next thing to look at is the water pump. See if the water pump is leaking water from a vent hole. If it is, then the water pump is defective and will need to be replaced. Sure hope this helped.

your fans need replacing try hooking them up straight to battery to check if they spin fast its not the fans but the wiring.
