Question about 1991 Mazda MPV

3 Answers

I had the alternator rebuilt and have replaced the battery. Battery tested at 12.9 not running - vehicle start battery at 12.5 - vehicle turned off climbs back up. When I am driving the vehicle will lose power (ex. windows up/down slowly, wipers slow down, fan blows slower, etc.). Then it will go completely dead.

Take the alternator to auto store like Shucks and have them bench test it in the store. If your not getting 13.5- 14.5 volts then your rebuilt missed something. A bad diode or two on the alternator or if your vehhicle has a voltage regulator, a bad regulator will also cause this. A voltage of less than 13.0 volts would indicate that the vehicle is drawing fromthe battery to runn the engine under demand thus draining the battery over time. That's a charging problem in the system, check alternator on the bench test then go to the voltage regulator if you have one. Make sure belts are not slipping, less then 1" play.

the diodes are the one way direction of the ac current which transmitts the alternating current to make it a direct current by using diodes making a direct current . (that is the voltage regulator)

diodes flow electricity in one direction to make direct current..you can check your diodes with an ohmmeter pos and neg leads on battery if you have more than .5 ohms resistance on a motor running the diodes are bad.just got to have the Cahonies to touch the probes to the terminals...

Car not starting or turning over indicates towards multiple possibilities. It can be issue with battery or weak battery. But if battery checks out ok, then it can be starter issue or faulty alternator or problem with low fuel pressure or no spark at spark plugs due to dirty spark plugs or faulty ignition coil or injectors getting cracked or dirty and needs to be cleaned.

To confirm the problem, the basic troubleshooting is required.

The car was running fine one day then the next day it would not start. We tried jumping it thinking the battery might be dead and it still would niot start. The car has power until we take the jumper...

Sounds like you have a toasted battery or alternator. Have you performed a load test on the battery? Have you tried to charge the battery? First remove the battery and charge it externally from the vehicle. If the battery won't hold a charge, or won't hold a charge of 12 volts, replace it. Once you have the vehicle started, test the operation of the alternator. It should be putting out at least 13 volts back to the battery to keep it charged - if it is putting less than 13 volts or more than 16 volts, replace the alternator.

Replaced alternator and battery in 2002 Chevy Tahoe. Battery voltage remains between 9 and 14 (leaning more towards 9 and at times falling completely until trucks shuts off)

Hello,
When you say battery voltage how are you testing it? Are you looking at a gauge on the dash? Or are you physically testing it with a multi meter? If the truck is dying and you recently replaced the alternator and battery I would first suggest you to check all them connections again real good. Snug them all up. Check for corrosion and clean as needed. Did you replace the battery and alternator with new/re-manufactured battery and alternator? The alternator needs to put out at least 13.6 volts to charge your 12 volt battery or the battery will not maintain a charge. However the alternator runs the vehicle once it is started. The battery is used only to start the car and then the alternator runs it. So if your vehicle starts and runs and then dies you may have a bad alternator. Check your connections first and then test the alternator with a multi meter. Anything less than 13.6 volt will not suffice. 14+ volts would be the hopeful output of a good alternator.

How do I check to see if my van is running off of the battery instead of the alternator? It seems like my cable wires are lose down at the bottom

Have you been having trouble starting it? A real easy way would be to attach a multimeter,( DC voltmeter) and check voltage before and after engine is running. Should get 12-12.5 volts not running, and 12.8- 14.5 roughly when running, depending on how much charge battery needs at the time, which is regulated in the alternator.
If battery is lower than 12 volts, you may want to have it tested to determine it's condition.

My low voltage light came on in my 2002 volvo s80. I just replaced the battery. Is is something else than the battery?

the alternator. have it tested as if it iis failing the car will run off of whatever voltage is left in the battery until it is consumed as the alternator is supposed to recharge the battery and supply the power for the cars components
