Engine light on after oil change but mechanic can't find problem

Bought 2008 Cadillac CTS AWD five months ago. Oil light came on after a few weeks, nothing was wrong and it eventually went out. Changed the oil two weeks ago, now the engine light is on again. Mobile 1 synthetic 5W30 was used. Mechanic can't find anything and wants to change the oil again, but for what? Seems to be grasping at straws.

Thanks for replies, I picked up the car from mechanic last night (without doing an il change) and now the engine light is off. It looks like there is a special warranty extension to cover a problem with the timing chain. Have an appointment with the dealer tomorrow and will know for sure if this is the case here. Stay tuned ...

The oil change warning lamp can only be reset with a suitable diagnostic equipment. Always reset the oil service light immediately after each engine oil change even if it is not illuminated..

Took the car to a dealer this morning (should have gone there first). They confirmed that the code read (p0021 is in fact for a timing chain issue and it is covered under a special extended warranty for 10 years or 193,000 km. The work will be done by the Cadillac dealer.

At first all my sympathies are with you. If you did not get the oil changed, it could happened even by that time. Frankly speaking this code has no connection with the oil change phenomenon.

Now come to the point of discussion.

Code P0021 Camshaft position sensor (CMP) defective/intake/left/front bank 2 valve timing advanced, or system performance. The probable causes could be valve timing maladjusted, or camsahft position sensor wiring or circuit connection. All the job cannot be done without a workshop facility.

Switch the ignition to "ON". Near the speedometer you will find the button describing the car symbol. Repeatedly press this button until the message (% OIL LIFE REMAINING) or (CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON) is displayed in the bottom of speedometer.

Sorry for your mishap. Even if you did not take the car to get the oil change, it could even happened. Frankly speaking it has no connection with the oil change.

SOURCE: reset oil life display after oil change?

THIS SHOULD BE IT.
How do I reset the Engine Oil life monitor and how does it work? TO reset To reset the Engine Oil Life monitor do the following:
Reset Oil life in NAV/DIC by (with car running) going to INFO>Oil Life>RESET
Press and HOLD until XXX turns to 100%
How does it work? The oil life monitor is a pretty sophisticated algorithm.

SOURCE: Check engine light came on dealer states the oil was 2 qt's low

this could be a serious problem as you stated oil residue in exhaust pipe. You can remove spark plugs and check for oil fouling, this is a sign of bad rings, valve guides or seals. A cylinder leak down test would be your best check at this point to see if there is piston ring damage. If the rings are bad, oil would be burned at higher r.p.m. and may not be noticed at idle. I strongly suggest returning to dealer if under warranty or qualified mechanic as potential for engine failure may be present.

SOURCE: I have 55,688 miles on

The oil pump could be bad, or going bad. Oil pressure is effected by wear on the crankshaft main bearings and camshaft/s bearings. If those bearings are bad, that would make it lose oil pressure, but I wouldn't think it's time for a new motor at that mileage!!! I would find out what the actual oil pressure is, using a "wet gauge" or oil pressure gauge. The oil pressure sending could also be bad, giving false readings.

I dont think there is a connection between an oil change and the gallons per mile.
With that age car, I suggest a Terra engine clean. It will blow away nine years of gunk from the spark plugs, fuel injectors, cylinders and exhaust. Should give you more power, more miles..

If you run with a check engine light on then you are looking for big dollars for repairs.. The light is there to tell you to have the fault codes read so that repairs can be kept to a minimum. So run the fault codes and find the fault .

Where is oil filter located on 2008 Cadillac CTS 6 cylinder

The Location of the oil filter depends on which engine you have in your CTS. the 3.2 engine the oil filter is located on the bottom of the engine to the left of the oil pan. It is not a screw on type filter it is a canister filter. You will have to unscrew the lid to gain access to the oil filter. On the 3.6 Engine the oil filter is also a canister filter but it is located on the top side of the engine. On the drivers side around the center of the engine cover. It will take a 15/16 socket to remove the lid.

HUGE OIL consumption! My check engine light came! Loud rattling!

Sounds like an oil seal or manifold gasket. If you don't see oil in your driveway, the oil is burning off in the engine and this would cause the misfire if it's getting to the sparkplugs. Take a flashlight and look under the hood for any small pools of oil near the sparkplugs. I'd go to a different dealership for service and I'm willing to bet they'll confirm an oil seal or gasket problem. Best of luck with your problem.
