Will the neutral safety switch keep it from shifting out of low gear?


The neutral safety switch should not affect the shifting of the transmission. The neutral safety switch is there just to make sure that you have the transmission in park or neutral when cranking the engine. It is just a safety mechanism to prevent cranking while in forward or reverse and having the car lurch forward or backward.

check that you have installed the gear lever in the shift rail when you refitted the lever tower on top of the box

were the master cylinders bled when you installed them..if not the clutch is not fully releasing..this will keep the gears turning and the syncronizers will not allow first or reverse as these are both extremely low and the car needs to almost be completely stopped..before they will go in..

Hi i was wondering if i could change my transfer case instead of changing the front and rear gear ratio? my transfer case is broke now and i do alot of mudding and sombody told me if i get a dfferent...


The output ratio of all the transfer cases I've seen is 1:1. (in "normal" 4wd) Low gear is different. As it says, it's lower than that. The ratio does differ but you'd have to check it to see what it is. I know there are aftermarket gear sets that are available for serious off-roading. Installing them would be a "standard rebuild" right out of the manual but you'd need to also have the gear manufacturers instructions as sometimes different thrust washers, spacers etc need to be installed to make them work without wearing or breaking. Before considering doing this yourself or having someone do it for you, I'd consider finding a few off roading forums on line and asking what other people have done and the results they got. Changing gearing changes stress loading of other components and many times what seems like a simple mod can require a lot of expensive changes you did not anticipate. Two weak links i can think of off-hand usually are the universal joints and axles.
So, likely you can change the ratio but only for low gear. It will change the final drive ratio but as I said you need really good information before going ahead with it!!!
By the way...there's also a cable system available that replaces the electronic actuator made for gm transfer cases. You might want to look into getting one. They are more reliable.

I just want to know the best drive to drive my 2007 Envoy in snow & ice on hills. My gears are 2up, Auto, 4up & 4dn. I drive in 2up, but today in the snow I put it in Auto, It drove pretty well. ...


The basic explanation of these gears are as follows.
2up/2wd is a basic two wheel drive setting where the vehicle will react as a rear wheel drive. In this gear the transmission will only distribute power to the two rear wheels(best for all around driving with clear road conditions and will give the best fuel efficiency).
4up/4wd is a high speed four wheel drive setting. in this gear the transmission will always distribute power to all four wheels and will allow you to drive at higher rates of speed( good for poor road conditions when ice and wet roads are a moderate risk).
4dwn/4lo is a low gear four wheel drive setting where again the transmission will distribute power to all four wheels but will limit you to a low rate of speed(good for really rough roads and severe weather or very poor traction conditions).
auto gear selection is basically a all wheel drive setting, where the transmission will use a primary setting of rear wheel drive gearing until the vehicle slips or looses traction on one of the drive traction. as soon as the transmission detects a difference in wheel speed between the two rear wheels, at which time the transmission locks up the front differential turning itself into a four wheel drive, until the wheels have regained traction and remain spinning at the same speed for a set amount of time, at which time it will then unlock the front differential at return to a rear wheel drive setting. this is a good all around gear but will cause you to get slightly less mpg/kpg then a 2up/2wd gear would. i hope this helps

It is difficult to change gear from high gear to low gear, it is not as easy as going to high gear. Model Kawasaki Fury 125 (2008)


I am assuming when you say changing from high gear to low gear you are talking about changing the chain drive gears if so yes it can be difficult because the rear wheel must be removed and also the front sprocket must be held stationary in order to unscrew the hold down nut, this is usually the hardest part of the job but not impossible. Don't forget that most people that change the sprockets to increase off the line torque usually change the sprocket in sets unless you want to shorten or lengthen the chain, sometimes this si neccessary other times the chain slack adjustment range will allow you to get away with not needing to lengthen the chain, this only applies to people who decide not to chain the sprockets as a set.

99 Jag xj8l stopped shifting low gears, only goes in high gear.


You will need to have your tranny rebuilt or get a replacement. As a mechanic myslef, I have seen this a few times in the Jag XJ series. Those people eneded up having tranny replaced as well.

Transmission slips starting in 4X4


4x4 low is just alow ratio gear in transfer case just for when you need that extra boost when your stuck or pulling something up a hill or thru mudd, something on that order. you can run the transmission in any gear you want, but drive is the prefered gear. in other words when your in 4x4 low lieve it in drive. happy 4 wheeling. OLD SCHOOL.
