The pickup is a 1978 Silverado 350 V8 Half Ton

just took it out and the filter is pretty dark. boy i hope thats all it is...

  • jdaggett May 09, 2009

It runs better, but I still have the same problem. It starts when the RPMs are higher, like cruising at 65mpg + or when accelerating enough to kick into overdrive. Fuel pump or carb maybe?

can the auto shops test the fuel pump before replacing it?

  • jdaggett May 10, 2009

It idles good and I just replaced the air filter. It runs great till the rpms rise, which is what has me confused. these trucks are pretty dang basic, which is why im confused. It seems that if the fuel pump were bad, it'd manifest itself in idle on up to high rpm, but as it is I only run into problems in high rpm and after Ive been driving the truck for a while. Thinking of it, the truck is at its worse when its warm.

if the truck is back firing and dieing and or back firing and still going the problems start at the heads your springs are going bad and your valves are burnt that or your timing is out of wack.

Probably one or the other... or both.

Yeah, they can check your fuel pressure, but they would probably charge you more than that old fuel pump is worth. It's only two bolts and a line to take off. If it was me, i'd just put a new one on, and try it. Your air filter is clean... right? You don't hear any vacuum leaks, and it idles good?

The fuel pump is probably weak and is able to supply enough gas at low speeds and idle, but not the rest of the time. They don't work like an electric one. You've checked your distributor cap, rotor, wires, plugs?

When does the overdirve need to be turned on

Usually the overdrive should just be left on. It should only come into play when you are at high speeds above 50mph. This is essentially your "5th Gear" and should increase fuel economy. If you leave the overdrive "OFF" on the highway your engine RPM will be higher causing the fuel economy to suffer.

I have a 1992 Camry V6. When I start up the car, it's fine. About 5 minutes into the drive, the car starts to shake when it's stopped. When I'm on the HWY, the car shakes when I hit 55-62mph. To stop...

The problem is in the transmission Overdrive gears. You need to have the transmission checked and probably serviced. It may be a simple adjustment or Fluid and Filter change. I do not recommend you all them to use a synthetic replacement however as most of the time I have seen this done the transmission burns within about 6 months.

Stalls at low speed when in cruise control

You sould have recieved a "recall" notice in the mail about the cruise control for fire and failure issues. they are adding a fusable link where the cruise control harness connects to the brake master cylinder. if you have not had the recall performed yet you should SERIOUSLY consider getting it done, mainly so it doesnt catch fire, but "could" be the result of the failure you've been experiancing! btw, almost ALL Ford vehicles have been affected with the cruise control recall. hope this helps!
