Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

97 3.9 dakota when it's cold outside and I start my truck it'll start right up but idle down til it quits . Start it again and it will idle.. Go down the road and it misses bad until it warms up. After it warms up if the motor is kinda luggin it is shaking a lurching. If I get on the gas and let it downshift and the rpms go up it does fine. But in overdrive and gettin up to speed when cold it misses does anybody have a solution

Here are the most common causes of idle surge, rough idle esp when cold and stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

Engine stslls while driving usualy starts back up. now wont start .have fuel, new throttle position sensor, idle air control, sounds like pump is getting, help????

you don`t say how you know it has fuel. did you check the fuel pressure with a gage and did you check the fuel volume as well. this sounds like a fuel pump problem.

I would get your battery load tested. Most auto part stores will do it for free.

When driving my 99 dakota 4 x 4 magnum v6 the engine will shut off. If I put engine in neutral and start the truck it runs finethe

They are right in a way. It will be next to impossible to fix it if you can't duplicate the problem, because you will never know if you found the problem.
Two common problems with Mopar products are the ASD relay and the pickup coil in the distributor.

You probably have some corrosion on your battery terminals. Make sure they are clean and connected good and tight.

95 Dakota has problems idling in the cold.

If its a throttle body, try cleaning the Idle Air Controller (IAC). This is for a carborated engine but its not much different for a throttle body http://dodgeforum.com/forum/dodge-ram-van/68174-diy-how-to-clean-the-iac.html .They get gummed up and wont thet the truck idle properly. The other thing that could be a problem is the MAP sensor. I would start by checking the IAC, its cheap (cost you a bottle of throttle body cleaner) and easy. I read somewhere you can pull the harness off the MAP and if that fixes the problem, then the sensor is bad, but who knows if that is really the problem. When you clean the IAC clean the whole throttle body just to be sure that isnt the problem. Hope that helps.
