There are over 200 reasons for the light to come, the gas cap is for the most part an urban legend, although a loose gas cap can set a code.. U will need to have an OBD 2 system trouble code test run to determine the cause of the light, this test reqires a scan tool..

Check engine light and AT light came on

First, double check that the gas cap is good and tight. Sounds silly, but sometimes a loose gas cap will cause the check engine light to come on. Failing that, take the car to someone who can read the codes. You might have a bad or lazy O2 sensor but the codes are the quickest way to tell.

2005 Hyundai Tuscon with the check engine light is on. The car is running fine. I had just put gas in it. The gas cap is securely fastened. I took it in for an oil change. The light still plagues me.

When a 'check engine light' (MIL=Malfunction Indicator Lamp) is turned on, there is a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) set/stored in the ECM/PCM (Engine Control Module/Powertrain Control Module). This code identifies which engine management system component/function experienced a malfunction. Once you pull/read this code, you may begin diagnosis.

Stop by your local Autozone, Advance, etc.. autoparts store, have them perform a FREE fault check. They'll comeout to your car, hook up their scanner, read the faults, print out the faults (in ENGLISH) and reset your light - All for FREE

There are lots of things that will set the light, and not necessarily a safety issue or noticable to the driver. Have the car scanned for trouble codes and send them to us. Many parts stores offer free scans (autozone, advance, etc.)

Check engine light on always, then after driving a distance on freeway starts blinking. All fluids are fine. Even bought a new gas cap because other didnt seem to seal properly.

On some models when the check engine light is on then starts flashing you could be causing damage to the catalitic converter. you take this car and have the codes checked. converters are not cheap. let me know codes and maybe I can help

Check engine light is on, but the car seems to be

The purpose of the check engine light is to inform the driver that the car's ECM has registered a problem. It then stores a code in it's memory that can then be "pulled" by a hand held diagnostic trouble code reader and usually the issue an be corrected. More times than not, the car will seem to be running fine even with the light on because the ECM will compensate for the problem as much as it can to keep the system functioning. One thing you can do is remove the gas cap and put it back on making sure that you securely tighten it until you hear 3 clicks. After driving the car for 30-50 miles, the light may go out. If it does then the gas cap was not tightened completely causing air to enter the system (the system utilizes vacuum so it must be sealed air tight). If the light stays on, take it to a Dealer or trusted mechanic for further inspection. ALWAYS BE SURE YOUR GAS CAP IS TIGHTLY SECURED AFTER EVERY FILL UP OR THE LIGHT WILL COME ON AGAIN>

Idiot light, but otherwise runs fine

first check ur gas cap if wasnt put on correctly ,left off ,or does not seal usually sets off one of the evap codes--if cap looks good than need to check vent valve possible faulty and the wiring circuit for damage or short -also check vent valve for blockage

My check engine light has come on but the car seems to be running fine. The water and oil is fine... What might be the cause?

transmission fluid, power steering fluid, a sensor may have malfunctioned, needs new airfilter or even a wire has loosed from the engine sensors.

My engine malfunction light just came on. What

Assuming that you maintain the vehicle properly, I will start with the basics. Make sure oilis properly topped off and not dirty. Check charging system by monitoring the power of your battery and how the car starts. Look around the bottom where you park the vehicle for signs of anything leaking. Check all other fluids (i.e. radiator coolant, brake fluid, etc.). Sometimes changin the type of fuel will cause this. Also check the fuel cap... make sure it is tight as some vehicles sense this by monitoring pressure in the gas tank. If a visual inspection of all these things do not reflect a problem, it is best to have an authorized mechanic perform at least a diagnostics. Today's high-tech vehicles are computer controlled and difficult to diagnose a trouble light without running a diagnostics. Sometimes the lights do come on at the slightest hint of a problem and may not really be a problem... but always play it safe and have it checked.
