As much as you probably don't want to hear it, I believe it is time to replace the a/c compressor. Be sure to change the orifice tube while you are at it. The compressor should take approximately 8 ounces pf pag 150 and about 32 ounces of freon.

Yes it is possible that your expansion valve is clogged or stuck. That being only one of many possible causes. That would be a good place to start. If the unit has rear air you have two expansion valves. One will be located under the dash near the evaporator coil on the suction line. The other will be located in the compartment nearest the rear evaporator coil on the suction line. Please do keep in mind if you open the system you will need to change the dryer/accumulator as well as any parts you change. If this doesn't fix the problem you may have a bad compressor. Hope this helps, good luck!

Whine noise

Remove the drive belt to the ac compressor and spin the pulley by hand .If it feels rough or can be moved sideways then replace the bearing in the pulley (it can be separated from the compressor with out opening up the system)

Could it be a rear wheel bearing? Also check the condition of the tires, severe cupping can make a heck of a noise.

When you switch to defrost or the air conditioner, the vehicle shuts down completely

Does it shut off, like the electrical system shuts off and the engine slowly stops (the same as when you turn off the ignition)? Or does it stop abruptly and with a noise, like a squeal or thunk? If it is the former, then it is a short (or bad ground) in your air conditioning system. If it is the latter, then, yes, it could be the compressor bearings are seized.

Compressor make noise and air is not cold

HI,
If compressor make noise that means it's working, so low noise on compressor it is normal,
but just check when you turn a/c on, the hub...(kind of plate covers the compressor pulley)... starts runing, you might need refill freon but if compressor hub it is not woring, begin to check for electronic things such as fuses related with a/c

  1. Air conditioner system is discharged. Have the system evacuated, charged and leak tested by an MVAC certified technician, utilizing approved recovery/recycling equipment. Repair as necessary.
  2. Air conditioner compressor clutch not engaging. Check compressor clutch wiring, electrical connections and compressor clutch, and repair or replace as necessary.
