Timing out on Hyundai excel 97

I have had a problem with my car lacking power for awhile now, it has been idling rough and when you drive it hestites and then surges when it kicks back in as my foot is to the floor, but just yesterday I had it at hyundai and after a couple of hours they decided it had something to do with the timing as it is 85deg and they say it is meant to be 5deg. What affect does this have on my timing belt and should I have it replaced?

We have taken it today to a mechanic for the timing belt to be changed as it has become impossible to drive, we struggled to get it to the mechanic as it was jumping, driving extremely slow etc. Hyundai wanted to charge too much to look at the belt thats why I have taken it else where.

Its not the timing belt any ideas what else it could be??? Please help my car is not running well enough to drive and my nerves are wearing thin..

The timing belt is fine, sprockets, etc all fine the mechanic said should last another 80000km. The ecu keeps saying the tps is out of range, the air flow sensor is faulty and the oxygen sensor is faulty, we have tried changing these sensors except the o2 sensor and still the problem is there. What would be causing the ecu to put out these false readings? we have also changed the ecu.

It sounds like a bad ground or wiring problem, check all the grounds you can find and make sure the battery terminals are clean and tight.

Without seeing the car, that's about all I can offer.

What is causing the 85 degrees of timing advance? Did you have the belt replaced, are you sure they put it on correctly if it was done because the belt would have had to be re-timed if it had jumped?
What did this other shop say?

If your timing is really out that far, it's possible that the timing belt jumped and you may need to replace it immediately. What did Hyundai recommend you do?

As a mechanic, I would be checking the afm and throttle sensor, located near the air intake unit, excels have a known problem for this unit going faulty, would probably cost around $40.00 AU.

That would be my starting point.

Cheers,

Dani.

Hi-- i believe they are referring to the ignition timing not the valve timing!-----however,excels are bad for doing timing belts and if you have done the kilometers --then by all means have the belt replaced--------it can cause very expensive damage if it goes on the road---cheers

What is EGR

It's the Exhaust Gas Recirculation system.

A motorised valve in the exhaust system opens & closes when required to allow some exhaust gas back into the inlet so it' goes back through the engine - any remaining fuel is burnt & emissions are reduced.

These can be prone to fouling with carbon & residue which causes reduced valve movement or complete jamming - it can be intermittent & can result in a variety of issues, poor starting, rough idle, cutting out, lack of power........

Sounds like it could be a fuel delivery problem.Check the fuel pressure it should be 35-45 psi with engine running. If its not within these specs then replace pump and filter.

Have you checked the primary gauze filter that is part of the fuel pump located in the fuel tank. You may have got a batch of dirty fuel that has clogged this filter which would cause fuel starvation when demand increases.

Sounds like its time for a tune up. Start there and your mechanic will be able to note any other abnormal conditions. change fuel/air filter and any other maintenance items you haven't done so far.

I was driving and heard a pop noise and then my 97

could be the timing chain. Was it a pop or more like a ping . A ping could indicate a timing chain problem. The tensioner might have gone bad.

Lack of power and rough idle

Is your "check engine" or "service engine soon" light on? Lacking power is usually an emission system problem, for instance possibly a bad EGR valve or mass air flow senser. O2 sensers are common to fault but normally doesn't cause power loss usually causes alittle rough idle. Could even be a pluged catalic converter to. have the truck plugged into a scanner, that will tell you the trouble codes and fault info.
