Hi. The mechanical fuel pump is located on the engine block or on the cylinder head. Normally, it is a sealed unit that cannot be repaired.

* It should be inspected for fuel leaks.
* If gasoline is leaking at the line fittings, these fittings should be tightened to the specified torque.
* If the fuel leak is still present, replace the fittings and/or fuel line. When gasoline is leaking from the vent opening in the pump housing, the pump diaphragm is leaking and fuel pump replacement is necessary.
* If engine oil is leaking from the vent opening in the pump housing and the PCV system is working properly, the push rod seal is worn and pump replacement is required.
* A loose pivot pin may cause oil leaks between the pin and the pump housing. When oil is leaking between the pump housing and the engine block, the pump mounting bolts should be tightened to the specified torque. If the oil leak continues, the gasket between the pump housing and the engine block must be replaced.
* The pump should be checked for excessive noise. If it makes a clicking noise when the engine is operating at a fast idle, the small spring between the rocker arm and the pump housing is broken or weak.
* If engine performance indicates inadequate fuel, the pump, while mounted on the engine, should be tested for pressure and volume. Incorrect fuel pump pressure and low volume are the two most likely fuel pump troubles that affect engine performance. Low pressure causes a lean mixture. Excessive pressure causes high fuel consumption and an overly rich mixture that can result in fuel injection or carburetor flooding. Low volume causes fuel starvation at high speeds.

I would also change the fuel filter as well. its located Under hood, center, upper firewall, mounted in fuel line

I have a 2003 silverado, it starts fine in the morning but the rest of the day it cranks for a long time before starting. turning the key on and off a few times doesn't help. I have had the fuel pump

If the fuel pump is inside the gas tank, remove the gas cap, to equalize the air-pressure inside/outside the gas tank. That should let the fuel pump "suck" the gas from the tank.

Disconnected battery and reconnected it and car will crank over but will not start

Could be several items:

Would start with fuel pump. Can try banging on tank (if its in the tank) or tap on pump if outside.

To test fuel pump:

Locate fuel filter, disconnect line and on the exit end of the fuel pump. Turn ignition on and attempt to start. Be careful no open flames, or spark cuz if fuel pump is working gas will come out.

If no fuel now disconnect other end of fuel filter. Fuel filter is now removed. Try starting vehicle.

Note in most cases it will only put fuel out for 2-3 seconds to prime the fuel lines and then goes out for 5-10 while vehicle starts, then turning back on.

Having someone to help look will help when checking this. If fuel comes out now then the fuel filter is plugged. If nothing then fuel pump is toast.

Look up on YouTube how to remove fuel pump from either in tank or out of tank.

We put gas in our car and it turns over but won't start.....and it don't sound like the fuel pump s turnin on and smels lke no gas is going to the it possibe that the fuel pump is out and...

It is possible that is plugged. The fuel pump is in the gas tank. when you turn the key on you should hear the fuel pump turn on. I would check fuses first, if they are good while you are cranking the car over have someone else bang hard on bottom of the gas tank with their hand. If the fuel pump is stuck it might start working again. Good luck

Where is my fuel pump at? on a 1995 chevy camero 3.4 yes ran the car out of gas put so in wont start now what should i do first

Your fuel pump is in the tank. Turn on the ignition, and listen if you can hear the pump run in the tank. It will only run a few seconds if the engine is not running. You can repeat this several times to prime the fuel injection.

While i was driving the car acted like it wasn't getting gas and then stalled and now won't start 2004 grand am

sounds like the fuel pump went out. It is located inside the tank. turn the key but dont start and have someone listen for a 1 to 2 second hum by the gas tank. If they hear nothing then your pump is bad. REplace your fuel filter first, it is outside the tank and could be clogged. YOu could get lucky, but I bet your pump is bad.

I have a bad feeling that your fuel pump is gone or a wiring problem. the fuel filter if not on the outside then it's in the tank. Try to bang the tank when someone is cranking it over. If it starts you need a fuel pump

Ait sensor for 2003 nissan sentra 1.8

if it cranks for a longer time than normal and than it starts, you my friend need a new fuel pump rebuild kit/pressure regulator inside the gas tank. what happens is that the fuel will go back into the gas tank instead of staying in the fuel line and everytime you turn the key, the pump has to pump fuel all the way to the injectors again to get the car started. So, long crank and than start means fuel pump rebuild kit/pressure regulator in tank.
