Clutch fan i bought a engine from a guy and the fan blades are bent ,i want to install a new fan but i cant get this one off (WHICH DIRECTION DO I TURN THE NUT IN AND HOW DO I HOLD THE WATER PUMP SHAFT FROM TURNING

Turn the nut counter-clockwise, try putting pressure on the fan belt,or there is a tool for this problem,if you need more help get back to me, please rate my fix,as i strive to be the best

Turn left/counterclockwise to loosen. You keep the pump from turning by holding the fan blades. Go all way around the fan and loosen the nuts before you take any out. Maybe soaking the bolts iwith PB penetrating catalyst will help free them.

Need fan clutch replaced


You can take off the 4 bolts that hold the fan on the water pump pulley carefully and you won't need to take off the pulley. You may be able to do that without removing the fan shroud, but it will add a difficulty factor if you don't. Take out the fan clutch with the fan blade still bolted on. Separate the fan blade from the clutch and install the fan blade on the new clutch unit and re install it on the engine .

How do i remove the fan and pulley on a 1987 ford ranger 2.9 v-6?


The question is: How remove clutch in order to remove fan mounted on its engine-side face.
  • Generally, the clutch drive half shaft must be uncoupled from coolant pump (impeller drive) half shaft using special wrench kit available as loaner from AutoZone (free with $79 approx deposit).
  • Best done after shroud & radiator remove after coolant drained.
  1. Uncouple coolant pump and fan clutch drive shaft(s) as follows:
    1. span across combo-pulley-sheaves-unit mounting bolt heads with large tool kit wrench, and
    2. span inline clutch coupling nut with small tool kit wrench. Then,
    3. turn small wrench (and coupling nut) CW while resisting with large wrench (CCW) to turn coupling nut until disengaged from coolant pump drive shaft.
  2. Remove fan/clutch assembly.
  3. Note direction of mounted fan hub and fan blades orientation to ensure proper re-assembly.
  4. On rear of clutch assy, remove 4 bolts to disengage and remove fan.
  5. Assemble new fan to clutch (or, preferably, new clutch and new fan) using new bolts and washers provided with fan.
  6. Couple fan-clutch assy to coolant pump drive shaft as per opposite of uncoupling step 1, above. (Turn inline nut CCW to tighten...30 ft-lb.
  7. Check that fan can be hand turned...CW.)
  8. Rest shroud over and onto fan.
  9. Replace radiator; remount shroud; reclamp hoses, and refill and air purge cooling system.

We have an 87 Ford f150, 8 cylinder , 2 wheel drive truck. The fan seems to be off balance, and sometimes hits the housing. Is there a gasket, or something that holds the blade tight to the front? Can I,...


A fan cannot go out of balance unless a blade is broken or bent.
If you can wobble the fan with your hand, likely either the bearing in the water pump is worn out or the fan clutch (aluminium center hub on fan) is bad.
If one of the blades is damaged, you should also have the engine mounts checked as most times if the pump and clutch are good but the fan is hitting the shroud it's caused by a mount that is allowing the engine to move enough for the fan to hit the shroud.
How easy or expensive the repair will be depends on what you find.
When diagnosing a fan problem, never stand in line with the fan..If a blade breaks off it can fly up and hurt you. Whenever observing belts or fan, keep your hands in your pockets. it will help stop you from reaching out to touch anything that's moving. Only put your hands in there with the engine OFF!!!

Fan blade goes what direction on 2001 Honda passport. I was repleacing clutch and forgot which way it goes. blowing foward or towards the engine?


The blade should be facing in the direction to pull air in and over the engine. You should have some tell tale sign on the base that will give an indication of how it was mounted before removal, such as bolt or flange marks.

I just installed a clutch fan into my 2004 dodge durango and now the suv runs so heavy. I mean the suv runs loud. Is this normal?


Not sure what you mean by "heavy" and "loud"..

The fan might be "louder" because it may have been allot more quiet with the old failing fan clutch and not spinning fast enough.. Thus the new one working correctly making the fan spin much faster and being "louder"..

How can i tell if the fan clutch on my 05 titan has gone bad


* Fan operation can be checked by spinning the fan by hand.
* A noticeable wobble or any blade that is not in the same plane as the rest indicates that replacement is in order. The fan can also be checked by removing it and laying it on a flat surface. If it is straight, all the blades should touch the surface. Never attempt to straighten a damaged cooling fan. Bending it back into shape might seem easier (and cheaper) than replacing it, but doing so is risky. Whenever metal is bent, it is weakened.
* Fan clutches use a fluid-filled chamber (usually silicone) to turn the fan. Obviously, loss of the drive fluid will render the fan useless.
* One of the simplest checks is to visually inspect the fan clutch for signs of fluid loss.
* Oily streaks radiating outward from the hub shaft mean fluid has leaked out past the bearing seal.
* Most fan clutches offer a slight amount of resistance if turned by hand when the engine is cold. They offer drag when the engine is hot. If the fan freewheels easily hot or cold, replace the clutch.
* Another check that should be made is to push the tip of a fan blade in and out. Any visible looseness in the shaft bearing means the fan clutch should be replaced.
* Fan blades are balanced at the time of manufacture but can be bent if handled carelessly.
* Likewise, fan clutches are machined very accurately to run true. However, rough handling at the time of pump replacement causes nicks and dents on the mounting faces. This can cause the fan blade to be installed crookedly. Serious trouble might follow soon after the car is back in service.
* Therefore, handle fan clutches and blades with care and be sure to file away any nicks, burrs, or dents someone else might have caused. Obviously, if any fins have been broken off the fan clutch, it must be replaced.

Cooling Problem With My 97 S10 Blazer


Leave belt on, the fan clutch will loosen in the same direction that the fan turns while engine is running.There is a special wrench for these but, as a help to loosen it, with a heavy hammer and long chisel, place chisel blade near top of nut flat and strike firmly till it loosens in the direction the fan turns. This method is really not recommended as it is a shock load the water pump is not made for.Use care not to hit strait into shaft center. Before replacing fan blade, what caused fan to hit shroud?? Fix that so it don't happen again!Good luck! Freezing and thawing in Michigan!
