If the oil was properly changed the last time it shouldnt take anything more than just a FRIM counter clockwise turn, If that doesn't work then you will need a Strap Wrench, or an oil filter wrench. shouldn't be anything more than 1/4 to1/2 turn past snug.

Found no oil in filter during change

Unless you use an anti-drain back oil filter, oil in the filter will drain back to oil pan after sitting for a while. To avoid dry start condition, use anti-drain back style filter. NAPA has them.

How do i change the oil in my 1994 buick park ave

first you will check your owners manual for the required specification of what weight ( 10w30) oil to use and then the fill capacity.( 5.quarts ) also the auto parts store will tell you those as well. I always buy one extra quart. Once you have oil and filter, warm car up for 3-5 minutes, (this will help oil drain faster and easier) once car is warm shut of motor, block rear wheels jack the front of car up enough to slide under it. BLOCK car or support with jack stands.put a drain pan under car, remove the oil drain plug on the bottom or side of the oil pan.( make sure your catch pan will hold at least 6-7 quarts of fluid. once oil has stopped draining replace drain plug, now remove the oil filter, unscrew counterclockwise, lube new oil filter seal with oil, screw on to oil housing clockwise rotation, hand tighten. fill motor with oil to recommended fill capacity.start car , check for leaks around filter, if no leaks shut car off and lower car to ground, check oil on dipstick and wipe off, insert and check again, fill to fill line on dipstik and your done.

Where do you add oil?

Hello,

  1. Jack up the car in the front and place on jackstands or place the vehicle on a service lift and raise the vehicle.
  2. Remove the plastic undertray covering the bottom of the motor. There are usually five or six screws that should drop away with just a quarter turn from a screwdriver.
  3. Once you have removed the undertray locate the oil drain plug. This is basically a large bolt head that simply sits in the oil pan with nothing else attached. it sits in the pan sideways at the bottom of the pan on the passenger side. Beware of the transmission oil drain! It is not a bolt head, the drive of the transmission plug is in the shape of a star. Do not open this plug. Make sure it's a regular hexagonal bolt. You may want to use a torque wrench to take this off and to reinstall it.
  4. Place a tub or some sort of oil drain receptacle beneath the oil plug then remove the oil plug. Allow several minutes for the oil to drain completely.
  5. Remove the oil filter. You will need a filter wrench to break the old one free. Take care to keep the filter upright when you remove it as it is full of old oil. Drain the filter of oil in the same pan you used to drain the engine.
  6. Install the new oil filter. Use your finger and wet the rubber gasket on the new filter with the old oil that you drained. You only need a little bit. Then install the new filter where the old one is. Install with your hands and make sure the filter threads in straight. You should install the new filter at "hand tight" and if you like you can give it a slight tug with the filter wrench afterwards. DO NOT OVERTORQUE THE FILTER.
  7. Once the oil has drained, replace the oil plug (Audi recommends replacing this drain plug every oil change... its up to you). Be sure to torque the plug to specifications. DO NOT OVERTORQUE THE DRAIN PLUG.
  8. Replace the undertray and remove the drain tub and tools from underneath the car. Remove the jackstands and lower the car back on the ground. Pour new oil into the oilcap and start the car. Let it run for a minute then check your oil level again. Once you have your oil level adjusted you're all set. Some people like to fill the oil filter halfway with new oil before installing it. That is up to you.

Keep in mind, do not overfill the oil... if you do the excess oil can cause damage to your catalytic converter.

Hope this helped you solve the problem.

Take care and good luck

How to change the oil

If the thought of performing your own oil sends chills up and down your spine, just relax. You can tackle your own oil change, saving both time and money. There’s no need to wait in line at your local service station and no cause to pay someone for labor. Just put your game face on, gather a few tools, and tackle it on your own.
Start your oil change by gathering several items. You’ll need motor oil - secure about four to five quarts. You’ll also need a new oil filter, old rags, a funnel, an oil-drain pan, a box wrench, and an oil-filter wrench. You may or may not need a car jack to perform your oil change. This depends on how close the bottom of your car is to the ground.
Let your engine cool off and locate the oil drain plug. If you have trouble finding your oil drain plug, refer to your vehicle manuals. Use a box wrench to remove the plug and let the oil drain into a pan. Once the oil is drained completely, replace the drain plug.
For the next step of your oil change, you’ll need to remove the old oil filter. Put the catch pan under it. Remove the filter with an adjustable oil-filter wrench and a counter-clockwise motion. Expect to get some oil on your hands; an oil change is a dirty job. Take one of your old rags and wipe the filter-mount area, checking to make sure the old filter’s seal isn’t stuck on the engine.
Take some of your new motor oil and use it to coat the rubber seal of your new oil filter. Don’t put too much on; you only need a very light coating. Install the new oil filter by hand. Typically, an oil-filter wrench is not necessary for this step. Keep it handy, however, just in case tightening by hand fails to do the job.
Now it’s time to install new oil. For this part of the oil change, you’ll need to find and remove the oil-filler cap. Look for it on top of the engine; refer to your car manual if you have difficulty finding it. Put the funnel in the exposed opening and pour the new oil into the funnel. Be sure to refer to your car manual to determine how much oil you’ll need to add.
After adding the right amount of oil, replace the oil-filler cap, turn you car on, and run your engine for a minute. Check to make certain the oil-warning light doesn’t stay on and look under the car to make sure oil isn’t leaking. Finally, use the oil dipstick to check the oil level. Use rags to wipe away excess oil; newspapers are good for this as well. Congratulate yourself, as you’ve just successfully completed your oil change

I have a 1997 porche 911 cab, I have never changed the oil and filter myself. Is it hard and how do you do it Thanks

Gravity does all the hard work. If you can figure out how to work a wrench, you can change your own oil. I'd pickup a repair manual, it will have the basics that tell you how to do a tune up/oil change etc.

You should also google Porsche groups, I'm sure there are a lot of greasemonkeys hanging out there who love to train noobies.

Its not difficult, but you need to make sure you have the right filter, and know where the drain plug is, before you get started.

Basically you drive the car a bit to get the oil warm, then you park it and set the brake. Put a drain pan under the oil pan near the drain plug. Unscrew the drain plug, wear rubber gloves, the oil will be hot, let the oil drain into the pan, now fish around in the pan for the drain plug that you dropped into the hot oil cause the oil was burning your fingers, when you find the drain plug, clean it off with a paper towel and open a beer. Now you need to remove the old oil filter, they usually either unscrew or are in a cannister, that service manual I told you to buy will tell you where it is and how to remove it. now open another beer, and put the clean filter in wherever the old filter came out of. Best to order a pizza now or you'll be drunk by the time you get this job done.

Okay clean filter is on, time to put the drain plug back in the oil pan, if its an aluminum pan, you probably should use a torque wrench to make sure you don't overtighten it and strip the threads, otherwise just put a new lock washer/crush washer on the plug (it should come with the filter)
Now add some quarts of your favorite oil after opening one more beer. That manual you bought will tell you exactly how many quarts of oil your engine will hold.

After its all together, check the dispstick to make sure you have enough oil in your car, then start the engine and move the car, look underneath for oil leaks, thats a sign that the drain plug isn't tight enough.

Take it for a test drive as soon as you sober up from all the beer. Easy peasy.
