67% of the it's a loose gas cap or clogged air filter. You can go to Autozone or any parts store and they will hook up an OBD reader and give you the code for the light being on ( for free )

1999 silverado service engine soon light blinks

Don't confuse the Check Engine Light with the maintenance or service light. These lights illuminate when a routine service is due. They are usually triggered by mileage, gallons of gasoline consumed, or some other type of vehicle-use measurement.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I'll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using Fixya, and have a nice day.

Service engine soon light is on

Have a local parts store do a diagnostic scan on your vehicle to see what the problem was that set the check engine light on. Most parts stores will do this as a free service. They may even be able to turn the light off, if the problem was an intermittent one that was just a one time thing. If they cant turn the light off then the problem will need to be solved before the light will turn off.

My 1996 Chevy K1500 is shifting hard from 1st to 2nd when it's hot and the Service Engine light came on. It goes out and problem goes away when it's cooled down. What's wrong?

your transmission is overheating change the fluid and filter, and also check your cooling lines for that, you also may want to check the cooler itself
