Question about 1991 Geo Prizm
Car has been stored in dad's garage for three years now and has over 100,000 miles on the odometer. Wanted to start it up again so he replaced the battery and fuel filter. When he turns the ignition key the car turns on but as soon as he lets the key spring back into the ON position the car will shut off. Any idea what could be causing this?
Bad gas, it will be... fuel doen't last 3 year, and E10 less.(USA uses E10 fuel, 10% ethanol, that is a water magnet)
and the fuel will clog the 10micron sized screens in the injectors.
like clock work.

SOURCE: 97 Geo Metro will not start
IF you are able to jump the vehicle using cables connected to another car then it is a power issue, if the vehicle stays running after starter you can most likely rule out the regulator, it sound like the battery is weak and dieing, it can be strong enough to run the radio without having the power to start the ignition.

Testimonial: "i will take out and have tested at autozone, thanx"
It could be the starter, test the small wire going to the starter, it should have power when turning the key to start/crank. If it does, and the starter will not crank the engine, whack it with a hammer, if it then starts, replace the starter. If there is no power to the starter, then it could be the ignition switch, or the neutral switch, or a fuse/link blown.

Tips for a great answer:
you exceed the limits of the odometer, in this case by driving one million
miles, the odometer will start again at zero. Before the 6 digit odometers
became common, you would see many cars that were over 100,000 miles and the
odometer had "turned over". Million mile odometers were not common
until the early 90's, so you will still see cars with the 5 digit odometer!
If there are any problem in your odometer, you can
fix it by the a Odometer Correction Tool
