Question about Saturn L-Series

1 Answer

Car fan running constantly with car on and check engine light on.

My cars fan just started running constantly at its highest setting yesterday and then while driving home the check engine light came on. Had someone check the code for the check engine light and he said it was a faulty thermostat. But the car does not overheat so Im confused as to why the thermostat would be the issue. Help!!

Possibly a bad coolant temperature sensor, sending the wrong signal that engine is hot and requires fans to be on for extra cooling. I don't know of any sensors for the thermostat, but don't know saturns.

wouldn't know a saturn from a neptune, sounds better. On reflection, a faulty thermostat must be one of the possible reasons for the code-maybe the most common and first thing to check type of things. Which is true if the code was related to overheating. Ask the person to explain the code better, or try a new CTS sensor.

SOURCE: 98 328IS OVERHEATING AFTER CHANGING THERMOSTAT

Are you putting the thermostat in correctly? It it will not work backwards.

And to confirm that there isn't a different problem, take the thermostat out all together and see if it overheats.

Engine not fully warming up is not usually caused by the thermostat. Stats usually fail closed, not open.

You will want to check the water temperature sending unit or gauge after verify the water temperature with an external calibrated thermometer. You can attach and insulate the external thermometer to the housing where thermostat is located.

Reply back what you figure out. I will be happy to help you further.

SOURCE: tcs light, check engine light flashing and constant shaking..

Use an OBDII scanner, some auto parts stores will do this for you free of charge.
Codes P0300 through P0306 indicate mis-fire and you may also get codes reflecting Cat damage from running that way.
I know of one TL from this series (2000 3.2 TL) which had a warranty REPLACEMENT OF TRANSMISSION!!! free of charge and this very problem was solved. I still do not know why they were related. Talk to Acura customer relations about this.

SOURCE: overheats once in a wile no codes on scanner.

I have a 2002 Honda Civic Ex, it has been over heating but only in stop and go traffic, never on the freeway, i have replaced, timing belt, water pump, cooling fan relay, cooling fan switch, flushed radiator. There is no white smoke coming from the tail pipe and the oil is clean, when the car gets hot i can smell the coolant pretty strong, car has never completly overheated gets about 3/4 of the way til red.

My 03 galant has an electrical issue. My heater and air conditioner work just fine but the fans stopped working. What could be my problem

if the fan still works on highest setting only the fan speed resistor block is faulty.
if the fan doesnt work on highest setting check for power at fan while on highest setting with globe test light, as well as checking fuse for fan. 2 wires one power other is earth. if power is there the fan motor needs replacing so long as the earth wire is also ok check with voltmeter on Ohms for continuity should be a couple of Ohms any higher is no good.

Your MAF(Mass Air FLow sensor) You can take it out and try and clean it with isopropl alcohal first, you want to get the highest alcohal percentage when buying it, do not touch the sensor itself at all. Submerge it into alcohal and let it sit for a bit. let it fully dry before reinstalling. If this doesnt work time to buy a new one.

You could have a faulty radiator cap not allowing coolant to flow to the over flow reservoir. Also check where the hose at the radiator cap connects to the over flow hose as I've seen these get clogged up and cause problems. If you have a faulty thermostat this could also cause a vapor lock in the cooling system and would be apparent if the top radiator hose is collapsed.

sounds like the radiator cooling fan is stuck on .. that normally only comes on if the radiator gets hot ... there is a thermal switch mounted on the radiator that senses the temperature and turns on the fan . if its contacts get stuck then the fan stays on ... .. in some cars there is a relay that could get stuck . the relay is operated by the thermal switch .. .
