It is likely your charge wire or field circuit is shorted. If you mean you want to install an external regulator, I cannot recommend that, as it will likely cause a fault to disconnect the alternator from the computer. Trace all of the alternator wires, big and small; and I believe you will find a short. If you have an ohmmeter, use it to make sure the field power wire is isolated from chassis ground.
check the alternator and the alternator wire i have a 2000 dodge stratus se 2.4 and i had the same problem and it was the alternator wire came unhooked
